My tribute to the late great Cándido Camero will air on @kbooradio Thursday at 8 pm PDT! Afro-Cuban percussion master Cándido Camero passed away at the age of 99 in November of 2020. An NEA Jazz Master, recipient of a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the first conga player to play multiple congas together, the first to play conga and bongo together, the first to pitch congas to different notes in order to play melodies, Cándido’s many TV appearances in the 1950’s were a major influence in inspiring bongo and conga players throughout the United States. An innovator in Afro-Cuban jazz, some credit him as the primary figure in making the conga a standard part of the jazz percussion lineup. He also designed and created the first foot-operated cowbell in the 1950’s. (He was way ahead of the “more cowbell” curve.) Cándido was also an innovator in Latin Funk and Latin Disco where he found his greatest solo success. While he recorded with a voluminous number of artists including Machito, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Celia Cruz, Elvin Jones, Tito Puente, Dinah Washington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton and so many more, this special will focus exclusively on the many albums Cándido recorded under his own name over seven decades. He brought Afro-Cuban influences to American ensembles and dazzled audiences with his virtuosic multiple-drum technique.

The great Afro-Cuban musician Candido Camero passed away on November 7th at the age of 99. On today's Chor Bazaar radio show I offer a tribute to the man, a mere nine tracks out of hundreds of his recording credits with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Machito, Charlie Parker, Tito Puente, Charles Mingus, Celia Cruz, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, on and on. From rocking Havana's Tropicana nightclub for eight years in the '40s to being one of the most in demand Afro-Cuban percussionists in the world and receiving an NEA Jazz Master, Candido blazed a unique trail as the first person to play conga and bongo drums together simultaneously and playing multi-conga setups with as many as six drums. He even had a custom foot pedal cowbell created for him in 1955 so he could administer "more cowbell" with his foot. This tribute special focuses on his funk and disco jammers released under his own name.
