          she  had  been  on  the  verge  of  tears  all  night  .    from  the  second  she  stepped  onto  his  front  porch  to  now  .  .  .    curled  up  on  the  right  side  of  his  bed  ,    using  his  home  as  a  sanctuary  to  hide  from  the  disaster  that  was  her  so  -  called  -  life  .    how  was  she  supposed  to  tell  him  that  her  mother  had  raided  her  room  ,    stolen  all  of  the  money  she  had  saved  from  working  at  the  diner  ,    and  used  it  bail  her  boyfriend  of  two  months  out  of  jail  ?    it  was  embarrassing  ,    really  .    how  the  world  was  constantly  pushing  her  five  steps  backwards  .    all  she  wanted  was  to  get  out  of  hawkins  ,    to  get  away  from  .  .  .    all  of  it  .    now  ?    there  was  no  chance  .    at  this  rate  ,    she’d  be  living  with  her  mother  until  she  was  thirty  .    ❛    i’m  really  ,    like  .  .  .    not  even  that  upset  or  anything  .  ❜    her  voice  almost  cracks  ,    her  attention  fixated  on  his  bedroom  wall  .  ❛    i  just  .  .  .    needed  to  get  out  of  my  apartment  for  a  night  .  ❜

addie hated being stuck in her apartment. even if she knew it was for the best, or whatever else anybody wanted to spew at her to tell her during her whole “sabbatical”, she could still be bitter about it. but, hey, at least she wasn’t complaining as much anymore. that had to be some sort of good sign, right? but, in that particular moment, she’d been baking. and then that got her to thinking about everything else. so maybe she’d started to cry just a little bit. she totally thought she was hiding it better. so when she heard alex’s voice she turned around and smiled, “of course!” which sounded probably faker than anything had coming out of her mouth in a while. “i’m just baking. which is, like, a totally normal activity of mine. i just never have time to do it and i haven’t done it in a while. but i couldn’t decide what to bake so i’m doing cupcakes and cookies.” yes, that sounded totally fine. not like she’d been cooped up in her apartment for a while. “was i being loud or something?”

the words took him by surprise. maybe it was the late hour, or the fact that he hadn’t slept--not that landon really slept much to begin with but that was neither here nor there. he shifted the door open further and looked at her, opening his mouth to ask a question but falling short. the everything alright that almost came out was stupid, ‘cause clearly it wasn’t. so he went with, “if i knew i was havin’ company i probably woulda cleaned up a bit,” instead. he said it lightly, jokingly, because even if his place wasn’t a mess it definitely echoed a bit like the bar downstairs and had a lot of looks like it needs to be touched up spots. “you’re always welcome.” even if she’d only ever been to the bar downstairs, he’d never turn her away.
