Yes I agree it does make sense for it to take place earlier in the timeline for sure! it's kind of confusing in the long run though if the episodes aren't played in order, and I know that there are a lot of shows where it doesn't really matter, but the things being setup in miraculous make them matter. I guess I just don't understand why the episodes seem to be shown in different orders, or are not shown in in the correct order in the first place.

From my understanding, at least this first season of ML was designed to be viewed in any order; the episodes are designed to not require a certain viewing order and to be able to be shown however the various broadcasters want to shuffle them.  I think it’s just fan nature to want to organize them into a sensible order or to just discuss overall how you might want them to be!

That being said, I do think there needs to be an acknowledgement that there’s a difference between “can be viewed in any order” and “all results of each episode are erased at the end of the 22 minute runtime and are totally reset at the beginning of each new episode”.  My hope is that ML falls into the former category.  It’s the difference between, like, Marinette being voted class rep in one episode and that while it may not be mentioned again particularly, would never been contradicted in a future episode VERSUS an episode where the characters end up on the moon and then are just back where they were before in future episodes (think Spongebob episodes that end with very nonsensical endings).

The frustrating thing with the latter is that we end up needing to retread the same ground over and over, and it always feels like we’re spinning our wheels, whereas the former, while not quite as clear for character development, can still move forward, even a bit imperceptibly at times.  Teen Titans (2003) tended to do a good job with that, having a few episodes that were building the main arc and others that were more ‘filler’ that still added layers to the characters interactions and helped them evolve over time.  I really hope that we see ML fall into that category, but only time will tell!

In the meantime, I do think it’s fun to try to find a “golden order” for viewing the episodes; it’s a great way to collect clues and track progressions and all that.

aside from the whole timeline conundrum what about that chat looking fondly at that family picture of marinette and family

Thoughts under the cut!  Obviously, #Miraculous Ladybug spoilers below.

To be honest, the reason why the timeline has mattered a lot to me for this episode is because it colors how I might interpret the rest of the episode.  Seeing Chat be a little touched by Marinette and her happy family is very sweet, but what is he thinking?  Where do those thoughts lead him?

At this point, he still thinks Nino likes Marinette, so is he ‘observing’ her for a friend?  Is he thinking about ‘aw, how nice for Nino, Marinette seems to be really friendly and has a nice family’?  Or is he thinking ‘wow, I really don’t know much about Marinette, but it looks like she really loves her family’?

Personally, I like the idea that “Animan” takes place very early on because it makes the most sense in terms of a) Nino having and then getting over a crush on Marinette and b) Adrien slowly developing feelings for Marinette.  It’s very likely that for him to eventually develop feelings for her, he needs to feel that Nino is well past his crush and that the ‘path’ is clear; otherwise, Adrien comes off as a bit insensitive, imho.*

Which is why I tend to imagine this episode took place early, and that Chat’s thoughts as he looked at the picture were something to the effect of “Wow, I don’t know Marinette very well, but she is clearly very loved.”

*Not that two people can’t like the same person, of course, because we can’t control our feelings, but it just seems to fit better if it’s been a while and Nino is clearly over it.

then knew. LOL im dying yeah they were helping her out the best way they could! It was so nice, and I betcha adrien was thinking how lucky marinette was to have such nice parents. I really do hope they get to interact together a lot more too !! also Now we know that marinette and adrien both like video games and hey thats something in common and something they could do together!

I’m sure he was!  I think there’s a lot there to explore for Adrien to see how different all these families can be.  If he’s been homeschooled and hasn’t been as exposed to other family dynamics, I’m sure it’s a bit of a shock.  I love the idea that at first he’s a little overwhelmed, a little shy, but then he learns he can just be himself and soon he’s taking seconds and thirds at dinner and putting his feet up on the couch when they’re watching TV.

And I agree, I love the idea of them playing video games together!  Maybe post-reveal they can use it to practice battle strategies?

OMg yeah I definitely agree that they know she likes him, I mean she did have his face plastered around her room! but omg I also loved the fact that as chat noir he mimicked marinettes dad! that was so cute! I can't wait to see how their relationship continues!! gah

OH SHIZNIT YOU’RE RIGHT I forgot about that.  They MUST have seen her room and how it’s plastered with pictures of this kid.  EVEN BETTER god damn do I love the Dupain-Chengs.

And YES that was also super adorable ahah.  I absolutely love the idea of Adrien and Tom being close and buddies and playing video games for hours until Marinette comes in and kicks both their asses and just generally having an awesome relationship.
