When Patrick disappeared, it was right around Thanksgiving, the year Casey turned 13. He was investigating a series of mysterious, supernaturally-related murders. He was then murdered as well when he discovered the culprit to be a group of dark witches—The Hallowed Circle Coven.

After his death, he was resurrected as a revenant. Casey was left an orphan.

Patrick used to tell Casey terrible jokes. She always thought they were funny. At least when her dad was telling her jokes, he was there and not neglecting her.

Casey’s mother died from cancer (supposedly) when Casey was just five years old. Patrick took it hard and neglected Casey for a long while. She lived with her father’s extended and estranged family until he decided to take his daughter with him on the road.

When Patrick was on hunts, Casey was often left alone in whatever town they were in. She spent most of her time in the motel room, watching tv, and reading comics, magazines or school books (yuck) to occupy her time.

Casey was in and out of school as a child, never staying in one school district long enough to learn much or make friends. Most of her schooling came from her father, or whatever textbooks she kept from schools she left.

A few things Casey remembers about her parents:

Her mom's nickname was Amie. Patrick called her that often. 

Amelia collected old coins. She liked the history behind them. Casey's not sure what happened to those coins. 

Patrick used to tell the silliest jokes. He laughed and smiled a lot more before Amelia died. 

Her mom smelled like cocoa butter. Whenever Casey smells it now, it brings back the memory of being held against her mother's chest, warm and safe. It's a bittersweet aroma to her.

Patrick could never cook very well. The extent of his cooking knowledge extends to scrambled eggs and mac n cheese. Take-out’s the only way to go. Casey grew up mostly on junk food, fast food, and pizza. Junk turned out to be Casey's favorite food group.

Revenants (undead beings)

All creatures, species, etc. are based on various folklore, mythology, and my personal canon with various media influences. Information is not complete and is a constant work-in-progress.

Pertains to the following characters:

Patrick Jennings

Revenants are dead humans who have been reanimated with their spirit or soul intact and are under the control of a witch. They are vastly similar to zombies but with a few key differences:

A revenant is resurrected by a witch or someone with enough power to raise the dead and are bound to the witch to do their bidding. They possess a consciousness and a spirit or soul still, placed there when resurrected.

Their state of decay is severely slowed. As long as they are under control from the witch who raised them, they do not experience any sort of obvious rotting

They do not crave flesh or brains and do not need to feed in order to function. The witch’s magic keeps them animated and under control.

They still have memories and thought processes, but this is often repressed by the witch, who can channel the revenant to do their bidding. It is akin to their mind and consciousness being trapped within their body while someone else possesses it and controls it. Some revenants may be able to fight this mental hold but it is a rare occurrence. 

If the witch controlling the revenant is killed or otherwise loses their connection, the revenant will continue to exist, now of their own will, but rot and decay will quickly overtake them. They will eventually return to a state of true death.

Revenants, while under the control of a witch, can be harmed. The witch’s magic will prevent them from returning to death, but wounds will not heal. They do not feel pain, nor do they bleed. If wounds sustained while under a witch’s control are too great, they may relinquish their control of the revenant in favor of one less damage. In this case, the revenant would begin to decay and most likely will revert to their dead state at a much faster rate. 

They do not breathe or have beating hearts. They do not require sleep or rest. 

The revenant's abilities and physical and magical strength are all dependent upon the witch controlling them. The witch can channel their abilities through the revenant, who acts as a conduit for the power. The witch can see through the revenant's eyes through the connection, often using the revenant as a remote vessel.  

A note on zombies:

Zombies are reanimated corpses that have been raised by a witch or a practitioner of necromancy, but they are not so much used as a vessel or conduit for the witch. They are generally mindless, without memory or anything pertaining to the person they were once alive. Best in large groups to inflict maximum chaos, damage, or confusion.
