CAOS Rewatch 1x6

FAUSTUS: Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t excommunicate the pack of you.

ZELDA: I can give you two. Earlier today, I received the results of your wife’s tests. Congratulations, Father Blackwood. Constance is expecting twins.

FAUSTUS: Twins?

ZELDA: Yes, it’s good news. However, it may be a difficult pregnancy. Not to worry, though, I’ll be tending to her every need. Unless, of course, you feel I, or, any members of my family are unworthy...in some way.

The way Michelle Gomez as Lilith says, “I was his acolyte. His student, then... his secretary,” with all of the heavy pauses just makes me want to laugh out loud. His secretary? Really? bull shit. Any normal sixteen-year-old girl would see through Lilith’s story in a heart beat. 

Lilith: I sought him out. I had been excommunicated from my own coven... (fuck think of another Church...quick! um...fuck. it has to be one she doesn't know very well...um...) the Church of Shadows in (quick...think of a state. any state. *looks at ink on hand*) New Hampshire (?). I’d fallen in love with a mortal, you see, and was engaged to be married. (ooh...yeah. that’s good. she’ll totally fall for that star-crossed lover crap. nice. *chuckles*). Foolish, but... there I was, a witch without a coven, with no one to understand my plight, no one, that is except--

Sabrina: My father?

Lilith: I showed up at his doorstep, eager to apprentice with him. 

[WAIT. HOLD UP. SHE SHOWED UP AT HIS DOORSTEP? Meaning the mortuary? The mortuary where Zelda and Hilda also lived...?!]

… Edward Spellman, who wanted to reform the Church of Night, change its laws so that witches and mortals could marry without stigma. He and your mother would be pioneers.

Sabrina: But then they died. Their plane crashed.

Lilith: Before that ill-fated trip, Edward charged me with keeping an eye on you. His only daughter...

[*blah blah blah Sabrina puzzles out that “Mary Wardwell” knew about the Academy and Dark Baptism all along**Lilith nods and smiles and says “Precisely” at this precious idiot.*]

Sabrina: I don’t understand. If my aunts were taking care of me, why would my father ask you to do the same?

Lilith: (shit shit shit fuck shit fuck she’s not as stupid as she looks--) … He was... cautious (?), overly cautious. Especially when it came to you, the apple of his eye. I was to be an invisible (fuck yes she’s buying it!) but omnipresent circle of protection around you.

Sabrina: Why would you agree to that?’

Lilith: (right oh yeah fuck that’s not what secretaries do, is it?) … I had... fallen in love with him, you see. (Nailed it!!)

we don’t talk about this enough: the fact that Zelda Spellman had enough power to singlehandedly turn the exorcism around. I know that she may have just given Sabrina the strength or confidence to do it by showing her support, but assuming that isn't the case, and it was actually Zelda’s magic that made the difference, Zelda Spellman was able to do something witches are supposedly incapable of doing. not only that, but she did it while actively being against the whole thing, when magic often relies on having clear intent/conviction.

I forgot how savage Zelda is in this episode. Not only does she sass the High Priest about obstetrics and call him out for being distracting as fuck when she’s trying to focus, she also sasses Sabrina three times in the space of like ten seconds:

“Mephistopheles save us from the melodramatics of a teenage witch!”

“Sabrina, cases of actual demonic possession are extremely rare, despite what the false God and his propaganda machine would have you believe.”

“Who’s talking about witches? Give me their names and I’ll make sure they stop talking about anything. Permanently. It’s just terrible when teenagers slip into comas, isn’t it, Hilda?”

...like, damn, Zelds! Not pulling any punches today, are you?

Ok so going off my previous post about how ridiculous Lilith’s cover story is, now I’ve gotten to the scene that launched the Madam Spellman ship.

Miranda Otto said that she thought that if she sat really close to Michelle, with her arm draped behind her back, it would look like Zelda and “Mary” were up to something. As much as I absolutely LOVE that Miranda made that choice, it only further confuses me as to why Zelda backs up Lilith’s bull shit story by saying, “This is just like Edward.” Surely, if Zelda and Mary were up to something, Zelda wouldn’t act so offended by Mary’s later insinuation that they weren’t capable of protecting Sabrina?

Also, the look of scandalized, crestfallen disbelief on her face when Zelda says, “Sabrina, you can’t possibly trust this stranger, can you?” makes me think that Zelda was only pretending to buy Mary’s story up until that point for Sabrina’s sake. So, it really makes me wonder what exactly Miranda thought the two witches would be “up to” (unless, of course, she was thinking more along the lines of the two of them having a steamy “I-don’t-trust-you-but-I’d-fuck-you-in-a-heartbeat” relationship🤣)

The scene where Zelda is trying her hardest to conduct an efficient examination of Constance and Faustus is hovering over her, pestering her with incessant questions, is incredibly amusing to me. Zelda and Constance keep exchanging glances like they’re communicating telepathically about how absurd Faustus is being, and how much they’d prefer to be alone together during an obstetrician exam.

But honestly, seeing him so attentive is kind of unnerving now that I’m rewatching this with the knowledge of what happens later. He truly only cared about the babies; not his wife, and certainly not Zelda.

I mean I don’t think that the writers thought about this one but I think we can all agree that lilith must have used 1% of her power during the exorcism. I mean she must be far more powerful that 3 witches together (even if they are 2 spellmans and sabrina before signing her name in the book)

Yep. I mean there’s a lot that the writers probably didn’t think about before making canon. It’s perfectly believable that Lilith would be holding back, but then again, why would she risk the exorcism failing when it is one of the requirements for Sabrina to fulfill her destiny...? The scene definitely implies that it was Zelda Spellman’s presence that tipped the scales in their favor, even if that shouldn’t be true if you think too long or too hard about Lilith being the First Witch.
