PICK-UP 🛻 SATURDAY
Affectionately named 'La pick-up' and was built in 1972 in Daimler’s González Catán production site in Argentina (production ran from '72 to '76), based on the Mercedes W115 chassis which was essentially an E-Class from the 70s. Came in either single or double-cab variant. These pick-ups pictured here fitted with diesel-powered OM615 2.2-liter engines, putting out 60 horsepower and mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. La Pickup, specifically the heavier 4-door version could barely scratch 80 mph. They were actually imported into Germany by railway company Stuttgart SSB to carry the personnel in charge of lubricating switches (not many made it to Europe, which is a darn tooting shame).
Trivia:- The orange 2-door was later purchased by a private owner and converted into a camper. That’s why the tailgate is closed off and the vertical taillights have been replaced by the horizontal taillights of the sedan.
Yes, the new Merc X-Class is rather lovely. But this W115-based truck is lovelier still
