One of my well fed little friends from this morning’s walk was this woodchuck—also called a groundhog or whistle pig, due to their distinctive whistle call. Not a friend to gardeners due to their persistence and hearty appetite, they are common in most areas of the Cape. I suspect this one is a mom, the same one I saw last year in this same spot with her kits. She may have young that are safely ensconced in her den, where they spend their first four or five weeks. Groundhogs are fairly large —up to 2 feet long—with a flat blackish tail. #capecodanimals #rodent #groundhog #woodchuck #mammal #whistlepig #nature #animal https://www.instagram.com/p/CqoOH8PvyYz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
