Okay I'm getting to this waaaaay late, but I'm still thinking about your tags on that gifset of Steve asking why bucky pulled him from the river, and you saying you wonder how bucky would have answered after Steve called bs on his "I don't know".
Like I legit have no clue how that interaction would have gone down if there wasn't a literal swat team breathing down their neck. Would Bucky have forced Steve to leave? Just clammed up and not spoken, still left with his backpack of notebooks? Or would Steve have been him to the punch and said something like " You saved me, because that's what you've always done. Why did you always save me?"
God we could have had it alllll🎶
It's the conversation that never happened. They kept using the suspense of Steve and Bucky's reconciliation as a carrot on the stick. We never really did get them hashing it out, you know. A "I'm not worth this", a reminisce about a day at Coney Island, some totally platonic eye fucking in an elevator before the big fight and Bucky literally being put on ice for the finale of the saga. Than next time we see them it's Bucky with the Good Hair and a hug with no real in between.
It's just so lackluster. They should've gotten to have a real conversation that resolved this.
If there wasn't high stakes involved I think it would've ended in some real tears and a rather desperate hug. Bucky owning up to remembering Steve and remembering Them but confessing he didn't really know why he saved Steve other than instinct and barely there memories.
If they had time but that's the tragedy isn't it? They never had time (and weren't afforded it by the movies).
