Have you had a dream 💭come true? Was it a good dream, I hope? This week something amazing happened. ☎️ I called Rick Simonson at the Elliott Bay Book Company on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. 😯 I hesitated to reach out because it had been years since we last spoke. But I called & introduced myself & he remembered me. I told him I’d written a book ✍️ & asked if it would be OK to bring him a copy? Elliott Bay is Seattle’s crown jewel 👑 of independent bookstores & I first met Rick there in the ‘70s. He’s been with EB for 45+ years & is the principal book buyer,📗📘📙 but he’s much, much more. He nurtured its literary series 🗣️ to become the most influential in the world 🏆 & has been credited for growing Seattle’s reputation as one of the best book cities in the US. 🇺🇸 Rick is a literary evangelist & discoverer of powerful, impactful & beautifully written books. 📚 He shared his excitement about his annual trip to the Jaipur Literature Festival 🇮🇳 #JLF, where he’s a well-known figure. His reputation extends across continents & time zones. 🌍🌏🌎 So why did he agree to place an order for #Blogging on Instagram? 📖 He admitted it’s outside his normal orbit, 🪐 but I believe he wanted to help me. And I am so grateful! 🙏🥰 If you’re in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, stop in & browse. 🔍You’ll find treasures curated by Rick, @bookmonger_seattle & EB staff members. They share great recommendations based on human intelligence, not algorithms. 🧠 As you guys know, I’m big on ((HUGS)) & when it came to Rick, there were plenty delivered in person. 🤗 When you can gather the courage to ask,❓sometimes the response is rewarding. Have you asked for something & been surprised by a positive outcome? 🙌 I hope so. Please share! . . . There’s a link in my bio to the Elliot Bay website. I hope you’ll support me & @elliottbaybookco. Also, if you’re in the #WestSeattleJunction in #WestSeattle, @PegasusBookExchange has 3 copies! . . . Just to let yall know. I live in seattle. and nobody really cares what is going on on capitol hill. What I mean is: that neighborhood has been the home of artsy, lgbtq, progressive, yoga loving, diverse, collage aged, Cascadia terriroty sympathizers. For DECADES. Nobody from the PNW is surprised or confused by what is going on. Or scared for that matter. I was 14 in 1999. When the WTO protests took place here. I was part of the occupy movement in 2012. This has been the reality in seattle for nearly my whole life. And im proud of seattle for refusing to allow these important conversations to end.
Made a lil thing cuz I 🖤 CHAZ. If you haven't been to the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (see my previous post), it is a peaceful community space where people are gathering to take care of each other and discuss action to best support BIPOC, hear them speak, and join in the fight against police brutality. There are no walls, just a perimeter to protect from cars. Restaurants, businesses, apartments are all operating as usual in and around the area. It is beautiful and inspiring, and the media is severely twisting what is actually happening here. Come see for yourself, or listen to people organizing there, and while you are at it consider donating to help any organization that is supporting BIPOC in your community. • A note: I got a lot of hateful and misinformed comments on my previous post, largely due to the false narrative fox news is spreading to control how this is viewed. They are straight making things up, photoshopping pics, and they have been called out and debunked by various other news sources. If it still angers you beyond control that this space even exists, ask yourself why the idea of a community centered around BIPOC coming together to heal, take care of each other, and take action against police brutality scares the shit out of you?✌️ #CHAZ #capitolhillautonomouszone #capitolhillseattle #blacklivesmatter #defundthepolice #lostteethart (at CHAZ - Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBZQti1JSzF/?igshid=1jm1lmwh9prco
