I’ve been sitting on this long enough, since mid-2016. Just added finishing touches on it, and it’s good enough to go. Niccolo Paganini was of course a classical violin virtuoso back in the day, much fawned-over by the ladies, well-liked by animals. One of his most famous pieces is this solo violin caprice, consisting of skilled variations on a single catchy theme. I first got to hear it when playing the old Commodore 64 game Super Pipeline as a kid, which has an 8-bit cover of the song on its soundtrack.
My cover follows the melody pretty exactly, but unlike conventional performances that rely on tempo changes, this one plays at constant tempo. (Because old video games also only played music at a constant tempo.) Variation is provided by switching around the chip sounds being used, and messing around with different counterpoint progressions.
