though, couldn't toads make you sick if you interact with one and then eat without cleaning your hands? is it possible to get salmonella from a toad?

Yes, DEFINITELY wash your hands! Any animal could give you a zoonotic disease, even one you’ve had as a pet for years. There’s no telling what they were sitting in just a minute before you handled them. I love my toads and keep their habitat clean but I’m still careful to wash my hands after handling them or their feeder insects. 

There’s also the fact that some toads have more potent bufotoxins than others, so if you were to have for example a pet marine toad then you’d definitely want to make sure your hands are squeaky clean after interacting with them or their environment.
