i play around with the concept of devil fruits a lot with my characters. both of my main storylines have my characters originating from the same place (sorbet kingdom, south blue). the reason this is so specific is because as an armenian person it really resonates with my personal background and ancestry, as well as the religious affiliations. of course i add my own flair to this when writing, but it influences both characters’ storylines greatly, and the choices they make.
as captain blackline, i really bounce back and forth between eating a devil fruit. i’m not sure i’d really need one, but i’m not opposed to it. if anything, i’d be a zoan and would eat the fruit to become a bat (so the bat-bat fruit… lmao). this is mainly because i’d use it for my crew’s main area of mastery: thievery and cat-burglary. i’m pretty nocturnal as a person in real life so it just made sense (acting like im also not goth). i’d use it for spying on what to steal and when; but i don’t need a df for that. it’s just cool.
as vice admiral star, i’d definitely be eating a devil fruit. it’s so fascinating how a different plot can influence a decision, but i see this as an indefinite choice for my marine background. i had to really play with the name for this one, but i’d eat the hemo hemo no mi (blood-blood fruit/hemo-hemo fruit). i came up with the idea by taking the prefix from hemoglobin. the fruit is a paramecia, but the power is a little difficult to explain.
hemoglobin is the main thing the user of the fruit can control, which really carry the majority of a person’s oxygen source. the user has the power to control someone’s hemoglobin, but in the OP world i dumbed it down to just red blood cells/blood; when the user controls the movements of hemoglobin in red blood cells, this can cause blood to rush, stop, freeze, or turn someone cold-blooded, like a reptile, effectively making them look visibly blue-blooded. insert here all the graphic things that happen when a person doesnt get enough oxygen to their brain/heart/vital organs. the user can also control their own blood flow. to not make the user overpowering, i came up with the concept of the user needing to recharge under the sun or warm light, just like a cold-blooded reptile needs to; otherwise, the power is pretty dull.
this is why my character wears a lot of ornate snake jewelry— she’s compared to a reptile often! …and also why her main job in the navy is to be a top tier interrogator directly inspired by the cia’s methods (…don’t worry, she wises up later).
