Chapter 3:Things We Carry

Summary:

After a long six-day onboard journey, Amelia arrives in Pearl Harbor in December 1941, immediately struck by the devastation. The harbor is burnt out, and the air reeked of oil and death. Suddenly thrown into field medicine with no time to acclimatize, she is thrust into the frenzy of triage with nurses like Lieutenant Evelyn Johnson, and Sandra, both of whom have considerably more experience, with only minutes to triage victims that are burnt, mutilated from amputations, and victims of every other kind of trauma.

Time passes, and the psychological toll begins to take effect. On one night in May 1942, Amelia was startled by a false air raid alert and was frightened into action, running for a shelter. She collapsed with exertion and extreme fear, restoring her trauma of the past. She sought comfort in Captain Danny Walker, a considerate Army pilot who seems to have developed feelings for her. That evening after I opened up to Evelyn, I wrote an unsent letter to Bucky – proclaiming my fears and my love.

In the following days, a letter from Steve gives Amelia hope: he had failed enlistment again, but Bucky could soon be deployed - he had completed boot camp. Bucky's own note was short — a line and a white daisy tucked between the pages — but it was incredibly personal to me, fueling my heart.

Just as she had started to find a foothold, Amelia received her own orders: she will be deploying to Guadalcanal in August to assist in building a mobile medical unit. In the days before her deployment Danny unexpectedly offered Amelia a flight in a P-40 Warhawk in the coolness of a moonlit sky, where he professed his feelings for her. Even with the knowledge of her long-held love for Bucky, Amelia allowed herself one night in Danny's embrace to feel warmth in the cold world of war. The next day they both learned that they would be deployed together on the USS Enterprise — for now.

“whoa is she coming over here?” Danny asked, trying not to look at the opening of the hanger where you were.

“she’s looking at you.” one of Danny’s friends grinned, “oh, now she’s coming over.”

“do i look okay?” Danny asked, fidgeting with his sunglasses for a second.

“hey Captain!” you waved, walking over.

“hi Y/N.” Danny grinned at you, “what’s a pretty girl like you doing in a hanger full of grease monkeys and Pilots like me?”

you shrugged, “came to see my favourite captain.”

“really, well he’s a lucky man.” Danny grinned.

“i dont know. he wont ask me out and im getting kind of confused.” you faked sadness.

“Y/N.” he said seriously, “can i take you out for a drink?”

“i thought you’d never ask.”
