I must confess to not knowing much about Panchita, a sidekick of Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune. Easy was the creation of writer and illustrator Roy Crane and appeared in weekly syndicated Sunday newspaper comic strips as well as eventually being awarded his own title. Easy’s first “solo” appearance was in 1933 and the character and title ran right up until 1970, under a host of different writers and illustrators. Easy was an all-American adventurer, getting involved in everything from espionage to treasure hunting. Easy had any number of female sidekicks, usually with imaginative names such as Holly, Honey or Penny. Panchita, who is featured in the panels above in a south-of-the-border romp, is a little different, in that she is Latina, and also seems to actually do something to help Easy out rather than wait to be rescued or admire our hero’s muscles.

However, in truth, Panchita sadly remains something of a cipher and, like so many of Easy’s other female companions seems to have been a one-off. There was potential for something more interesting perhaps, but Panchita ends up being one of the less interesting sidekick gals of the Golden Age.

A bunch of Roy Crane copy drawings I made yesterday. I don’t usually do stuff like this but Crane’s cartooning has such an infectious energy that he really makes you wanna draw just like him! So I tried!
