This is not a unique take, especially for a book thatās seventeen years old, but it wouldāve been so easy for Suzanne Collins to have Katniss be the one who gets reaped for the 74th Hunger Games.
Everyone was expecting it. You still have the story of her going to the Games.
But it would remove something so vital to Katnissā character. Having Prim be the one reaped and Katniss, who feels she would only be going there to die, volunteer for her is absolutely genius.
The Reaping itself isnāt what sets the tone of the story. The Hunger Games themselves donāt set it either. What sets the tone is that Katniss heard her little sisterās name announced and both literally and figuratively threw herself in the line of fire to protect her.
Suzanne Collins didnāt have to write it that way to make the story compelling, but in doing so she made something unforgettable.
