Headcanon: Cassian obsessively makes backups of K-2SO. He lost everything and everyone he’s held dear in his life. He can’t stand the thought of ever losing K2.

Do you think K2 is aware of the fact Cassian has a suicide pill in his pocket at all times, just in case he wasn’t able to get away from the Stormtroopers?

Do you think K2, who loves statistics so much, knows that soldiers like Cassian have about 23% chance of surviving more than 20 field missions?

Do you think K2 notices that people on Yavin-4 are still afraid of him?

Do you think he wanted a blaster so he’d be able to defend Cassian?

One of the things we learn from Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide is the fact the droids like K-2SO are programmed to recognize and listen to every ranked officer of the Empire. I guess what Cassian tried to do is to reverse that programming; he succeeded, but also caused one important side-effect. I assume he didn’t want K-2SO simply to “listen to the Rebellion soldiers” now, and by messing with his loyalty programming, he made the droid question all the authority. Which explains K-2SO arguing with Cassian, agreeing/disagreeing with the orders, feeling sorry, and finally - deciding to sacrifice his life.

Reading the novel we learn that before his death he runs a simulation showing Cassian leaving Scarif alive. Which means that he basically does what Chirrut, Baze, Bodhi will do after him -  he dies, thinking about the person he cares for the most.
