Chris crinkles his forehead at Jim, curious and not a little concerned. “Not exactly an art I’m trying to master.”

It’s part of being in Starfleet, yes. An even larger part of taking on the role of captain. That’s certainly something he’s had to learn over and over, and it never gets easier.

He knows, from Sam, that Jim had gotten that experience far too early. He also knows not to mention it.

“I had the impression you were the type to think he’d live forever. Did I get that one wrong?”

“ this is part of my training exercise and you agreed, ” a hint of frustration shines in her tone, not towards him — he is helping, and really, when this is all over, she will thank him a million times again, but right now she needs to blend in and apparently starfleet’s sense of humor needs checking ( and that’s something people usually tell her ! )

blending in seamlessly with aliens, this has been the focus of her research for the past years, this is the reason why starfleet nagged her for a year until she agreed to join the civilian exchange program, why she was on trill with lieutenant kirk, trying to see if any of their internal scanners, in government buildings and the local starfleet base, would pick up on the fact that his spots were not real, but an illusion created with some very clever gene altering. though, it was becoming apparent that it was just not clever enough, not yet. “ it would really help if you could tell me something other than they itch! any description, i’ll take anything! ” it would be easier to figure out where it went wrong if he was in pain; itching was a new and unforeseen side effect.
