For Rolfe:3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory?No, he had a pretty rough childhood and it’s something that he’s internalized and doesn’t like to think about much. He was the unwanted bastard of the family, and there was a 15 and 10-year gap between his other half-siblings. He was never physically abused, but the emotional distance and fake warmth when they were out in public (his father was big on appearing as a happy family for appearances’ sake) made him resent everyone. It also shaped how he treats children, both kids in Haven and Skyhold as well as his own children: he makes certain to take the time with everyone and treat their concerns as important issues and he makes certain that his children know that they are loved and wanted.
A good memory he has is his time spent in the family kitchens. His sister's nurse was sent to work there once Claudia outgrew the need for a nanny, and since his parents didn’t give his nurse reprieve from the kitchens and didn’t really want anything to do with him even as a baby, he was practically raised in the kitchen. It’s why the smell of baking bread is so comforting to him and probably how he developed his sweet tooth since he quickly became the little darling of all the cooks who gave him treats. He never forgot everyone’s kindness and when he grew up, he began setting up accounts to funnel his own Chantry wages to help them out.
A bad memory would be the first time he discovered that the man he thought was his father really wasn’t. He was 5 and his brother William had gotten mad at him for some reason, striking out at him and calling him a bastard. Mad that he had been hit, Rolfe hit back, but their father came into the room just then and asked what had happened. Rolfe explained and Edward just coldly looked down at him and sided with his brother, stating that there was no use in hitting anyone for stating the truth. Then he pretty much told a child that he would never claim him as his own and that his actual father was somewhere out there and didn’t want him either.
19. What’s their least favourite genres?Extremely bad romance. Rolfe will read romance novels so he and Cassandra can have book club discussions (but really, it usually dissolves into a reenactment of a sex scene) but he draws the line at anything weeping, turgid, described as flowers, or delving too deep into purple prose.
24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?Rolfe is part cat. He’s most active in the evening hours way into the very early morning, but you wouldn’t be able to tell he’d only had two or three hours of sleep because he takes little cat naps throughout the day. He’s perfected the art of napping in a way that no one realizes he’s asleep or half-dozing during boring dignitary meetings. He doesn’t snore, but he has been known to mutter under his breath from time to time. He isn’t picky about what he sleeps on, he’s spent years on Chantry-approved thin mattresses and catching naps during quiet spots in his line of work in a variety of uncomfortable surfaces. He does like to stretch out in Sera’s window nook because he likes the pillows she’s stashed there, though he did wake up with a mustache drawn on him one time. He complained that it was lopsided and not nearly as classy as Dorian’s.
6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?Vincent was a serious, studious little kid who absorbed everything like a sponge. He did - and still does - enjoy learning new things and while his formal schooling was completed inside the Ostwick Circle, he never considers himself “done” with learning. He was particularly interested in herbology and anything dealing with languages, but detested history due to the fact that he always got his dates mixed up.
8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals?His family keeps horses and on the occasions that he was allowed to visit home growing up, he could often be found out riding or just hanging out in the stables. He likes all sorts of animals, and has an affinity towards dogs (his father teases him that it’s his mother’s influence since she’s from Ferelden.) I can see him as an adult adopting something like a golden retriever or a black lab.
25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humour? Are they funny themselves?Vincent loves a good pun and cleverly worded jokes. He has a good sense of humor and can laugh at himself. He also has a very deadpan delivery of dryer jokes, but can be really funny in that “we didn’t expect the grumpy looking guy to crack a joke” way.
46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves?Unfortunately, he doesn’t make good first impressions. He’s tall with broad shoulders and in better shape than the stereotypical “skinny weak mage” since he was trained to be on reserve for army forces. Even without the scars, he has a grumpy expression and can be pretty intimidating without even meaning to. Add long hair that never really behaves, a bunch of deep scars on the side of his face and cutting into his jaw and he looks more mercenary than mage.
This is a total 180 of his actual behavior. Yes, he CAN be the Scary Mage when he’s angry or when he knows he can play that angle, but he’s actually very mild-mannered and is more a lover than a fighter. Vincent usually tries to make himself look as harmless as possible and has an unconscious habit of hunching his shoulders inwards to make himself smaller and speaks in a softer tone of voice when first speaking with new people without even realizing he does it.
Despite his looks, children flock to him. He joked one time that they must figure that if they’re friends with the scariest looking person in the room that everyone else has to be okay. And if they’re not okay, then they have someone big to hide behind. (Plus, they think the way he can make smoke come out of his nose and mouth like a dragon looks really cool)
