32. Writing heart-felt letters to crush which are never meant to be sent

Eskel leafed through the pile of papers on the library table. "What are these, Geralt? Anything you need, or can I reuse the paper for bestiary notes?"

Geralt's face did something complicated. Paper was precious here in Kaer Morhen, and they'd both been taught not to waste it. But he seemed distinctly torn.

"I guess... if you need it... that's fine."

Eskel squinted at him and recognised Geralt's 'I'm going to be a self-sacrificing idiot because I think my wants and needs aren't relevant' routine. He set the papers back down. "I'll let you keep these."

"They're nothing important," Geralt said, a little too quickly.

Eskel raised an eyebrow and waited. Patience was sometimes a useful tool when handling Geralt.

"They're just," Geralt squirmed, "letters."

Eskel looked down at the papers, carefully folded in thirds. "I see that."

"I write to Jaskier sometimes. To let him know about... things."

"You don't need to be cagey about that. We're all glad you have a friend."

"He's not my friend," Geralt said reflexively.

Eskel rolled his eyes and turned a letter over in his hand. "Tell you what, I think I've got some Kaedweni stamps somewhere. Why don't I post these for you next time I'm picking up supplies?"

"No!" Geralt's hand shot out and snatched the letter back. "They're not. Ahh. They're not ready yet. They're not... right."

Understanding dawned. "And it needs to be right before you send it?"

Geralt almost smiled. "Yes. The words have to be perfect."

Eskel clapped him on the shoulder. "Geralt, I'm pretty sure the words aren't the important part."

Fun fact: Me and @captnsunshine have a 5 year anniversary this month. Problem is, between then two of us, we can't remember the actual date.
