The sound of the gunshot had startled Jace, causing him to go on instant alert and draw his seraph blade. Not that it would have stopped a bullet, but… reflex. His eyes trailed their surroundings, but quickly turned to focus on Alec when his parabatai screamed, calling out Jace’s name in what sounded like panic. The blonde’s brow was furrowed in confusion at Alec’s words. Jace hadn’t been shot, why - Then he saw the blood slowly seeping through Alec’s shirt.
His heart stuttered. He dropped his blade.
The entire world seemed to shift. All of Jace’s focus went onto Alec, but still he was frozen in place. He watched in shock as the color seemed to drain from Alec’s skin, growing ashy and grey. He saw Alec’s body begin to shake as realization began to set in. Then he was falling.
Jace shot forward, his body blurring with his speed. He didn’t make it in time to catch Alec completely, but he did manage to hook a hand around behind the other’s head to cushion it from bouncing off the ground. “No, no, no, no,” His voice was barely above a whisper as he chanted the word, then it rose as his own frantic fear began to settle in, “Alec! Alec you’re going to be okay, alright? Just look at me, focus on me.” His other hand came up to cup the side of Alec’s face, turning his head so that he was looking at Jace. “You’re going to be okay.” His voice was hoarse with emotion despite how convincing he was attempting to be.
Gently he lowered Alec’s head back to the ground. Then he focussed on Alec’s stomach where the blood was coating. The blonde brushed Alec’s hand aside before he grabbed his seraph dagger and quickly cut Alec’s tshirt down the middle. His first instinct on seeing the open wound in his parabatai’s torse was to push pressure on it, attempt to stop blood from getting out anymore. His hand quickly replaced where Alec’s had once been, and he deliberately ignored the blood as it slipped between his fingers.
When Alec started coughing up blood a few seconds later Jace’s mind kicked out of it’s panicked state and back into high gear. His hands left Alec’s body. One blood covered hand reached back and grabbed the stele out of his back pants pocket while the other pushed the left side of Alec’s shirt completely off of his chest. “Just stay with me Alec,” Jace gritted out as the rune right above the skin over his heart, wrapped in protection runes and covered from sight, throbbed painfully. His connection to Alec, their bond, his parabatai rune. He poured his own stamina into their bond, channeling it in the hope that it would give Alec even just a couple more minutes. “I’m not going to let you part from me.”
He brought the stele up and began drawing the iratze rune over Alec’s heart, just under the rune that symbolized their bond. The wound stopped bleeding as profusely, but it didn’t close. The rune wasn’t enough. Once finished he tossed the stele aside and grabbed onto Alec’s hand, wrapping both of his around the other shadowhunter’s. He leaned over so he was looking in to Alec’s eyes, a shock of fear shooting through him when he saw that they weren’t as bright as they usually were. He steeled his nerves and quickly forced himself to focus. “Alec, stay with me. I need you to focus on the rune. We can do this.” Their parabatai bond was strong, and if he could just keep Alec with him. Keep him awake. They had a chance of healing this wound. “Please Alec, just try to focus.”
The whispered chants of the word no broke his heart. He so desperately wanted to stay alive for Jace, for everyone, but most of all Jace. He would be so lost without him, it would be like loosing a part of him, Alec didn’t want Jace to go through that.
It was hard to focus. The pain was agonizing, the bullet was still lodged in the wound . Jace would have to get it out, but right now, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything, only stare at Jace through dull blue eyes. The shock was taking over, his body violently trembling from the cold and fear he felt.
When Jace begged him to focus, he seemed to shake himself out of whatever shocked state he seemed to be in, Jace challening his own stamina into their bond seeming to help, if only a little “T-The wound......the bullets still there..” Alec spoke hoarsely, eyes fluttering closed, only to open again.
He was loosing so much blood by the time Jace had drawn the rune on him and while it wasn’t bleeding as badly anymore, he still felt extremely tired. “I-I can’t.....I can’t stay awake.” He said, voice weak and barely audible. “I can’t.” He repeated, this time the sound of his voice was more desperate as if pleading Jace to keep him alive if he passed out.
No! He couldn’t fall asleep, not without telling Jace how he really felt about him. If this was the last time he would ever get the chance to say those three words, he was going to do it. Right here, right now. Screw the awkwardness that would come if he actually made it out alive. Screw everything else. All that mattered was that he said it.
“I love you, Jace.” Whether Jace listened to the way he said it, the tone of desperation and pleading(pleading that he understood what he meant), it was all up to him now. Alec had said his part , now it was all up to Jace to understand.
Eyes began slipping closed again, but he struggled to force them up, desperetly trying to hold onto that last thread of strength he still had left.
