Know the Different Types of Rust and Its Removal in Cars

A car is always precious to its owner, and he will never wish to have rust on its body. Rusting is a very slow process and is very difficult to locate in the initial stage. And if left unchecked, a rust spot can quickly grow until it causes a structural problem. So, it is best to deal with the problem as soon as you locate the rusting.

It is quite important as well as essential to be aware of the different types of rusting process and the ways to deal with the issue in order to stop it from becoming a serious problem. By knowing to spot the problematic areas in your car and learning the importance of rust prevention and rust removal, you can maintain the car in a descent condition and integrity for many years.

Different types of rust

Generally, rust is the product of oxidation of iron-based metals. It is an electrochemical process in which the molecular compound of the surface of the metal body comes in contact with oxygen present in the air and produces iron-oxide that is commonly known as rust.

The different types of rust in cars can be classified into the following categories:

- Surface rust

- Scale rust

- Penetrating rust

Surface rust

The surface rust appears on the paint of the car body in the areas where there are small nicks, cracks and scratches. As the primary coating of the paint is ruptured, it becomes vulnerable to wear and rust. Iron is highly resistant to corrosion and rusting. But the metal used for the building of cars needs to have enough flexibility, and tensile strength. This is the only reason to make use of steel which tends to have impurities in the metal that accelerate the rusting process.

Scale rust

The development of scale rust depends on various factors like the alloy components, the thickness of the metal and the atmospheric conditions of the car. Scale refers to the oxides of iron that originates on the metal body of the car which is exposed to the high temperature or furnace treatments. Such chemical processes damage the surface and reduce the metal's strength. Although the alloy elements like chromium and nickel can repel rust, at the same time contaminants like road salt help to start the rusting process.

Penetrating rust

Gradually, the rust starts to break the integrity of the metal body and turns the steel into a brittle iron with numerous unwanted holes. The car manufacturers try a lot of things like use of more durable metal sheets and paint a thick anti-corrosive coating on the underside which chemically seals the steel against oxidizing agents. But, these precautions do not last for the lifetime of a car and when the metal is exposed to various weather and road conditions, it becomes vulnerable to oxidation. The penetrating rust can easily be prevented if you locate it in the primitive stage.

Removal of different types of rust

You can never completely avoid the rusting process in the car, but knowing to remove the rust at an early stage will help to protect the metal body. So, after reading the details about the different types of rust, let's take a look at the possible ways to remove and prevent them.

Surface rust

Mostly the surface rust occurs when the paint wears out due to mechanical or being exposed to excess ultraviolet light. The surface rust is not a major problem and its intensity depends on the metal's thickness and the alloy composition. The effect of this rust can be avoided by simply using a sandpaper or abrasive wheel to scrape off the paint and corrosion until the shining metal is visible. After that, apply a primer and followed by a paint job. Do not forget to clear the coat and polish the surface to perfectly blend the finishing.

Scale rust

When the surface rust is not cleaned, it gets converted to scales. It looks like tiny bubbles on the surface of the metal and molecules of rust are physically larger than that of steel. This type of rust starts to self-propagate by flaking away and exposing new metal to corrode. You can eliminate scale rust by wire brush and then get rid of the roughness by using a grinding wheel. After that bring sandpaper and make the metal surface smooth. Finally, apply a primer and complete the paint job. 

Penetrating rust

When the rust is not removed from your car at the initial stages, it starts to penetrate through the surface. In such a case, it is better to consult a good repair technician and figure out if it can be welded or the complete panel needs to be replaced.

The rusting of cars is to a great extent preventable. The best possible way is to wash your car routinely to keep the body and underside clean of the street grime, salts, and dirt that prompt corrosion. By following a strict schedule, you can easily keep the metal surface of a car away from rust and durable for a long period of time.
