Plymouth Belmont Concept Car
In 1928, the Chrysler Corporation formed a new brand for the production of inexpensive cars - Plymouth. Before the war, its products were of high quality and had an advantage over competitors in terms of equipment, so by 1940, Plymouth had taken the third position after Chevrolet and Ford.
With the arrival of Virgil Exner as chief designer of the Chrysler Corporation, the Plymouth brand entered the era of futuristic concept cars.
Among them, the Plymouth Belmont, a 2-seater roadster with a plastic body made by Briggs Manufacturing, stood out.
The car was built on a 114 "wheelbase Dodge chassis and powered by a 3.9-liter V8 241 with 150 hp mated to Plymouth's 3-speed Hy-Drive semi-automatic transmission. turbine-shaped headlights, tail fins, a plastic panoramic windshield and a soft top hidden under a plastic panel.
The show car was painted in metallic blue (later repainted in red) and presented at the 1954 Chicago Auto Show. The company had no plans to start mass production of the sports car, so Belmont was handed over to Exner, who sold it in 1968.

The Plymouth Belmont was the first plastic-bodied (reinforced fiberglass) Chrysler “idea car,” an experiment in new materials and design.
The Belmont was a convertible, made for the 1954 Chicago Auto Show by Briggs Manufacturing (rather than the usual Ghia, because Chrylser had just bought Briggs); it was designed in the Advanced Styling Studio, under the supervision of head stylist Virgil Exner.
