THE HOUSEMARTINS - CARAVAN OF LOVE
"Caravan of Love" is a 1985 song originally recorded by American R&B group Isley-Jasper-Isley, the second half of the Isley Brothers' 3 + 3 lineup of the 1970s. A cover version by the British band the Housemartins became an international hit, reaching number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 1986.
After breaking away from the family group, the splinter group including Chris Jasper wrote and produced this single, which was Jasper's interpolation intending to reach audiences by presenting Christian beliefs in his music. The song became the trio's biggest hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart and number 51 on the Billboard pop chart in 1985; it would be their only prominent hit before they embarked on solo careers in 1988. The music video was filmed on-location in New York City.
British indie band The Housemartins released "Caravan of Love" on November 24, 1986. The a cappella song was a success, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart on December 16, 1986 (only the second a cappella recording to do so, after "Only You" by the Flying Pickets in 1983), before being denied the Christmas number one single by a posthumous re-release of Jackie Wilson's "Reet Petite". The song was an international hit, reaching the top three in several countries, including topping the charts of Ireland and Sweden. It is included on the Housemartins' greatest hits compilation “Now That's What I Call Quite Good”.
In November 2014, British pop singer Pixie Lott released a charity version of the song as the lead single from her first hits collection, Platinum Pixie: Hits. The song charted at number 129 on the UK Singles Chart.

“This is a brilliantly collated and perfectly named 24 track compilation of The Housemartins’ 5 year career from 1983 – 1988. It’s not a best of (they only released two studio albums) though it does include all their hits. But by also including B-sides and BBC Radio sessions as well as fan favourite album tracks, it provides a far better overview of who they were as a band. . With their particular brand of mid-80s indie jangle pop: some tracks with a skiffle feel, some Northern Soul, most with a strong social conscience and often overtly politically left lyrics, The Housemartins were a distinctive sound on the airwaves, and we could do with the likes of Paul Heaton’s songwriting skills now. . Aside from hits such as Happy Hour, Think For A Minute, Five Get Over Excited and their acapella version cover of the Isley Brothers’ Caravan of Love (a big Christmas No 1 in the UK) my favourites on here are the lesser known Step Outside and their first single, which went nowhere but if it had been sung by Morrissey would have been an underground hit, Flag Day. . Equally brilliant are the liner notes on this comp, so good, I have to quote some of the best here: Think For A Minute: “120 copies were sold in New Zealand”; The Light Is Always Green: “This song was hotly tipped as a single until we discovered no-one liked it”; and Everyday’s The Same: “One of the band’s last musical ventures and possibly their worst. Lyrically vague and musically unimaginative…originally written in 1983, it wasn’t until 1997 that the band actually became desperate enough to record it.” . "Caravan of Love" has been playing in my head on and off for a few weeks. Not feeling particularly well about the state of the world, especially this country and our "so called leader". Having faith that it will bring more of us together, where we can reside in love and not all the hatred that is being passed around #caravanoflove #caravan #love #comingtogether #organizing #america #worldlove #worldpeace jasperisley #isleybrothers #loveoverhate #loveoverfear (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpkRDyQl_71/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14b9gnrbq5jvj
