“Carbon 7″ by Jlin

With its close proximity to the precise, the electronic, the robotic, the mechanical, and the ether, it’s easy to binary sort Jlin’s work into the inorganic, as well. Increasingly, it feels impossible to separate the two, to place boundaries on the inorganic world, to stop it from filtering (often, literally) my organic thoughts. I am already some advancing percentage of the singularity, and eventually there will be no difference between technology and humanity. Jlin creates art that is functional, it’s incomplete without a human body, nonsense internalized. “Carbon 7 (161)” is the sound of imperceptible change.

Jlin makes music for dancers so far beyond my abilities that it’s stunning to watch them move, but what I love about tracks like “Carbon 7″ is that they don’t leave us clumsy mortals behind in the process. Her beats skitter and pound with an urgency that mirrors the nervous rhythm of my body; the samples she loops through the track create an atmosphere designed to connect through headphones as much as a soundsystem. I don’t go out to dance like I used to, which no doubt frees up space for people who know what they’re doing. But I miss it, and when I miss it what I’m missing is the way “Carbon 7″ makes me feel: that inexorable, undeniable compulsion to move, to make my body part of the sound. Luckily, that part works even at home.
