ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2019

With so much great music released this year, it was nearly impossible to point to one artist or album that stands above all others. What follows is a list of albums that kept making their way back on my turntable in the last twelve months.

U-Bahn - 'Beta Boyz'

It takes roughly 10 seconds to fall in love with U-Bahn. If you miss early Devo, then you'll adore U-Bahn. Australia's U-Bahn come stomping into 2019 with a collage of glam-pop and new wave. Describing their music as 'nostalgia for futures that never came to pass; suburban boredom and sexual dystopias', the Melbourne 5-piece will thrill and baffle audiences alike with their debut LP, teeming with futurist art-punk. CARIBOU - Home

Kim Gordon - Hungry Baby (Official Video)

Directed by Loretta Fahrenholz. ‘Hungry Baby’ is taken from Kim Gordon’s new album ‘No Home Record’ out now on Matador Records.

CORRIDOR - Pow

Next week, the Montreal band Corridor, will release their third album, ‘Junior’, their first for Sub Pop Records. We’ve already heard the album’s lead singles ‘Topographe’ and ‘Domino’ and now they’ve shared another song called ‘Pow’. Listen above.

BIG THIEF - Forgotten Eyes 

Next week, Big Thief are releasing the “sister album” to this year’s wonderful ‘U.F.O.F.’ and we’ve already heard one of its song, a gorgeous, noisy indie-rock gem called ‘Not’. Today they’ve unveiled another album track titled ‘Forgotten Eyes’. Listen to it above and pre-order ‘Two Hands’ here.

ALESSANDRO CORTINI - Amore Amaro

On ‘Volume Massimo’, his stellar debut LP for Mute, NIN keyboardist and solo artist, Alessandro Cortini combines melody with the ambient experimentation of his 2017's universally acclaimed album ‘Avanti’, delivering another intoxicatingly dense yet minimalist work. Listen to the title-track above.

CATE LE BON - Company In My Back (Wilco Cover)

Wilco Covered is a limited edition CD - released via Uncut Magazine's November 2019 Issue -featuring 17 new recordings of Wilco songs covered by artists including Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten, Parquet Courts, Low and many more. The CD is free with magazine purchase, available in stores starting Sept. 19.

YVES TUMOR - Applaud ft Hirakish and Napolian

Warp-signed experimentalist Yves Tumor has returned with a new song called ‘Applaud’. The track features New Orleans-based artist Hirakish and Napolian and is Tumor's fist release since his  2018 excellent album ‘Safe In The Hands Of Love’. Listen above.

CARLA DAL FORNO - No Trace

London-based experimental pop artist Carla dal Forno has  announced her sophomore album titled ‘Look Up Sharp’, which is coming in October via Dal Forno’s own label Kallista Records. We’ve already heard two of its songs ‘So Much Better’ and ‘Took A Long Time’, and today she’s revealing another one, a haunting, dark-wave gem called ‘No Trace’. Listen above.

OMNI - Skeleton Key (Official Video)

After signing to Sub Pop in April, Atlanta post-punk outfit Omni have announced that their new album ‘Networker’, will be released on November 1st. We’ve already heard lead single and opening track ‘Sincerely Yours’ and today they’re sharing the album’s second single ‘Skeleton Key’ which comes with a video, directed by Omni’s Frankie Broyles. JENNY HVAL - Accident (Official Video)

Norwegian experimentalist Jenny Hval is releasing a new album, ‘The Practice Of Love’, this friday, via Sacred Bones. We’ve already heard two of its songs, ‘Ashes To Ashes’, and ‘High Alice’ and today she’s shared another one called ‘Accident’, accompanied by a video, directed by Zia Anger. Watch and listen above.
