SEE CARBON MIRAGE LIVE on OCTOBER 23 at CMJ
Carbon Mirage's Cary Clayon tells The 20 Something Project a story about unexpected opportunity and how his rule of thumb is to always say yes!
Everyone likes a "How we Met" Story, Carbon Mirage's tale is perfect. Carbon Mirage members Ricky and Carey met on the New York City Subway. Today's video talks about that fateful night!
Tonight was my first time seeing live music at Garfield Artworks. The venue had a vibe that was split between gallery and dingy basement. The front was adorned with sharpie-labeled boxes bursting with cd's and records, all for sale. The doorman, who I later found out was the guy organizing the show, took care of cover as well as the bar, which was mostly just him pouring Franzia into a plastic cup for a $1 each. The space was long and thin, and the white walls displayed art that I imagine has been there for awhile. When I arrived with my friends, the first band was just finishing up. We took the time in between to catch-up, but mostly joke about one friend's mishap in making a birthday cake that resulted in him wearing a massive diy finger-cast that night. We're great people. There were many familiar faces at this concert because the drummer from the third band, Carbon Mirage, went to my high school. I distinctly remember during free-time in either jazz or concert band where he would sit at the drum-set with no accompaniment, and I would be transfixed. He would play for 10, 20 minutes straight, throwing in polyrhythms and time signature changes at will, and and his hair was so long that he would look down, his face completely obscured, so it looked like a mop drenched in ink was just destroying this drum-set. Fast-forward eight years, and he's still throwing down those complex rhythms, but now he wears his hair short and looks out to his two bandmates, just as transfixed as I was when looking at him play the drums.
Their band is very good and deserves your ears' valuable listening time. They manage to combine jazz and post-rock into a cosmic groove that's like a healing salve for stress. Check them out.
Spent the day in Bed-Suy at the Indigo Artist Collective Garden Party Soirée. It was lovely (and Carbon Mirage played!).
