Since Bandcamp brought in a new crop of writers to their editorial section, I’ve been enjoying their daily blog. I’m guaranteed to find something interesting I’ve never heard of, which is, considering the amount of uninteresting material that gets posted there, a magical act. I was ecstatic when I saw the hosts of Black Girls Talking, one of the best podcasts being casted, would be doing a monthly column writing about their favorite music on Bandcamp. I shouldn’t be surprised that I would like their suggestions, but seriously, this Mal Devisa album is one of the best things I’ve heard all year. It has strands of the traps that makeup most “Bandcamp” albums (lo-fi recordings and bare-bones arrangements), but transcends them through pure talent and erratic compositions.

Favorite song on Ariana's album?

“Into You,” no competition. It’s one of my top favorite songs of 2016 in general.

There is a lot about this song that I love. The blown-out bass line in the chorus. The way she’s precious with her time, space and sequence in the song, teasing out the moments in the music, instead of immediately flooring it 0 to 60 with her pipes. The way she goes “look what you started!” like she genuinely didn’t mean to fall for it and hopelessly puts the blame for her feelings to the other person. The way she sells her want to “keep it secret” somehow comes across fairly well, considering Ariana is never one for subtlety; maybe it works because I know it’s impossible to hide something between Ariana but the effort to still try for the sake of a more “scandalous” experience is a bit admirable. The way the cliche “a little less conversation and a little more touch my body” in the chorus gets my soft spot as if it’s the first time I heard that pop phrase. The way the producers decide to drop it all the way down low after the horn section-filled bridge. And I’m a sucker for the phrase “into you” used in a pop song.

I’ll eventually put all these messy thoughts into a more coherent blurb/post – or I hope I will soon anyway.

Multi-hyphenate Kevin Garrett is a master of creating feels. With 2015's Mellow Drama EP, the Pittsburgh-born, Brooklyn-based broke and mended hearts with smooth numbers like "Control" and "Control," possibly explaining why Beyonce had to tap into his emotional well for the Lemonade opener "Pray You Catch Me."

I’m super obnoxious when people I know do awesome stuff so I’m trying to temper myself here and not just post a million exclamation points and swear words but I’ve known Kevin since in high school marching band and now he wrote the first song “Pray You Catch Me” on Lemonade like holy shit you shoulda seen me when I heard it, I was jumping around my room and screaming like a toddler. I heard him sing it maybe two years ago and to hear his piano playing on a Beyonce record and his words and melodies through Beyonce’s voice was so surreal. I

I hope you take a listen to some of his songs (Control is probably my favorite) and see him in concert if he comes through. Here’s a few pictures I took from his last show in Philly if you want an idea. Okay I’ll stop cheerleading now.

Lately I’ve been singing this song in my car a lot, and I had no idea it was released the same year I was born! I’ve never seen the movie and I can’t say I have much desire to (unless somebody thinks I should?). One day I will have the courage to butcher it during karoake.

Angel Olsen - “Hi-Five” (2014)

I don’t usually listen to music and try to figure out how it relates to me, but some songs break that wall, especially songs that confront loneliness head on. I’ve been living in Philadelphia for little over a year now and the initial loneliness has barely waned. Also, I feel like this song could describe my relationship to the internet and the people on here.

You know what so will I, if only to remind myself about tumblr.

I’ve recently had to curtail my music listening at work. Some days I don’t hear a single song between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, which has not been the case for me since high school. As a result, the nearly 2.5 hours of podcasts I listen to during my morning routines, commutes, and grocery shopping trips have taken on a much more significant portion of my weekly listening.

The Talkhouse reviews are rarely illuminating to me, but their podcast has crystallized the value of the idea. Turns out “Musicians talking with musicians” is infinitely more interesting than “Musicians writing about musicians.”

As far as recommendations for specific episodes, the Tunde Adebimpe & Ruban Nielson episode is fun to hear both of them talk about process and mutual appreciation, the Annie Clark & Andy Gill episode was great for technical guitar geekery, and any episode with Carrie Brownstein is great because she puts a lot of thought into asking interesting questions.

Japanese Breakfast had their album release show last night in what was one of the sweatiest room’s I’ve been in for a concert. “In Heaven” is the opening track Psychopomp and how they started their set, which, considering the rawness of the first two stanzas, amazes me. Half of that is how deep those lyrics cut, but the other half is that Michelle Zauner infuses it with fun. The room last night did not wallow for a second. Humor seems to be big part of Japanese Breakfast. Their jibing and stage banter is inviting rather than a series of inside jokes. It also comes through on lines like “I want to churn like Amish butter,” or naming a song “Jane Cum.” Pyschopomp gives me a greater appreciation for music than runs through the range of human emotions rather than music that sits in a specific corner of a particular feeling.

CALL FOR WRITERS: FWYL ZINE As you may know, I’m very passionate about the importance of crushing on pop stars. About how wanting to fuck someone while they’re on stage performing can enhance your experience and enjoyment of their music. About how wanting to fuck someone as well as loving their music shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

I’m especially passionate about the importance of women and queer people talking about and writing about crushing on pop stars. I think it’s important to voice passions that can be portrayed as silly or trite by cishet male music critics. I’ve written about it in more detail here, and I’ve also appeared on the a+ podcast @swoonstep, which celebrates women and non binary people talking about the music they love and the musicians they thirst over.

So, I’m going to edit a zine about crushing on pop stars tentatively called FWYL, which stands for Fuck What You Love (all credit to @barrybailbondsman for the excellent title).

This is where you come in.

I’m looking for essays by women and queer people about any aspect/experience of crushing on pop stars. If you want to join in, please send a short pitch, along with a link to a couple of examples of your writing, to [email protected] by Monday 4 April. Put the name of the musician that you crush on the most in the subject line. If you want to take part but aren’t sure exactly what you want to write about, or want to chat further, please drop me a line in the meantime - you can also hit me up on twitter at @msclairebiddles. I’ll try and get back to everyone within a couple of days. I’m looking for a wide range of voices, so don’t hold back!

Depending on the interest/number of successful pitches, I’m going to look into kickstarting some cash to make the zine, and hopefully get it printed nicely but relatively cheap to buy. More information on this to come!

I am currently studying for a final exam. I was absent on the class on Glosa by Juan José Saer, but I’m glad a classmate recorded it to upload it to a virtual forum. Glosa is about two acquaintances bumping into each other one morning in the street. They decide to walk together throughout 21 blocks and talk about a recent birthday party none of them attended.

I listened to the class only two weeks ago and there is one idea the professor said that I can’t take out of my head. Walking and talking is an elegy of youth, which is the portion of life previous to selling your time – which means, working. A conversation is different to a dialogue because it involves interest and even affection. Walking and talking is a waste of time, but it builds your subjectivity.

I spend too much time thinking about music and I sometimes wonder: what is the point of all these thoughts and all these written words? But I realized that all this thinking wouldn’t be meaningful if it didn’t include sharing. Writing your thoughts on blogs, talking on a podcast and even tweeting opens a conversation – but a new kind of conversation that wasn’t possible in the past.

Call me idealistic, but maybe music criticism is also about trying to keep time to ourselves – to our music – instead of giving it away. I certainly know I wouldn’t be the same without the internet and without all these conversations about music that I have everyday with you. I only feel sorry that we aren’t walking together in the streets of one same city.

Welcome to a Sea of Songs!

This month has seen the fifth anniversary of international music blog of mystery One Week // One Band – so what do you get the blog that has everything?

Well, it seemed silly to just write a long, pontificating note or conduct another theme week (when we’d just had one), so I quickly settled on doing something else entirely that nonetheless tried to capture the verve and dynamism of talking about music on the internet in a fun and fresh way.

So I made this.

a Sea of Songs is a casual, low-key companion to the OWOB mothership, a place on which anyone can submit a single post containing a screenshot of their music app of choice playing a favourite song, and combine it with a brief story on how it fits into their life & what it means to them.

You can detail an episode from your life in a diary-like observation, catalogue some fleeting impressions or half-thoughts as a status update, write a brief musical consideration, experiment with micro-fiction… it can be anything you like, however strongly or tenuously related to the music itself.

I also wanted to try out music writing on Instagram, so I’ll be cross-posting everything on a dedicated account over there to see how it goes. This also spurred the rule of a 2,000 character text limit. That’s a maximum though; “two or so paragraphs” seems a good medium aim.

So whereas OWOB lets an individual contributor detail a particular musical passion at considerable length, aSoS hopefully will produce a briefer and less constrained snapshot of the soundtrack to our daily lives, hence its tagline “screenshots of our lives in music.”
