Broken window dilemma
A couple of days ago after a rare Portland Oregon ice storm, I went out to my car to chip off the ice and warm it up. Before all the ice was off, I stupidly tried to roll down my passengers window. The interior mechanism immediately broke and the whole window slid down into the door. I looked online for the replacement part and found it for $75. When I called different mechanics they said they could do the job for $375, $175 labor and $200 for the VW factory part. When I ask the mechanic if they would do the job with the part that I brought in, he seemed annoyed and told me that the replacement part came from China, was a piece of junk, and wouldn't last two weeks. He told me that they only use those parts to sell a car as is. He strongly recommended I get the expensive factory part. Ultimately, he told me he would do the job but he knew I'd be returning two weeks later in need of a new window. I think he's exaggerating but If this window broke again I would be very annoyed and out another $275. Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.
