NFC peer-to-peer evolves with SNEP (Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol)

NFC device-to-device communication just got a whole lot easier with the NFC Forum's new Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol (SNEP)

The NFC Forum has announced its 16th NFC specification called SNEP (Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol). We'll save the technical information for later in the post and get straight to what this means for users before we worry about our resident geeks and developers. Quite simply, our NFC devices will be able to connect to each other and share information in a more seamless manner. The NFC Forum gave two use case scenarios which are as follows:

STMicroelectronics supports NFC in Windows 8

When Microsoft announced that Windows 8 would support NFC it wasn't really surprising to hear that much of the existing industry would rally to support Windows 8, and today you can add STMicroelectronics to that list. In fact, STMicroelectronics has worked with Microsoft to enable ST’s NFC solution support for the upcoming Windows 8 operating system.

Windows 8 support for NFC has taken NFC out from the cold and thrust it in the lime light. The question we hear now is not if will NFC take off, but when it will be available in PCs and consumer electronics.
