Apple Joins Board of Directors of NFC Forum

Today it was announced that Aon Mujtaba, a Director on Apple’s Wireless Systems Engineering team for the iPhone, has joined the Board of Directors of the NFC Forum. This is due to Apple becoming a top-tier sponsor for the forum which entitles them to a seat on the Board. This news comes almost a year after Apple added NFC chips to the iPhone lineup with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Apple has joined several forums over the past few years including the USB and Bluetooth connectivity organisations. Since joining these organisations, Apple has played a role in the development of the USB-C standard and Thunderbolt, both of which have become featured in the latest Macs. It’s quite possible that Apple has joined the NFC forum so it will have a greater influence in the direction NFC takes in the future.

Microsoft Windows 8 NFC shown of by NXP and UPM RFID at the Build Conference

We have all heard about the Windows 8 NFC tablet and the new NFC facilities being built into Windows 8 for all manner of devices, but until now we haven't really seen this in action. Our friends over at UPM RFID were kind enough to send us a link to a video they shot of that Samsung Windows 8 tablet in full NFC action, reading NFC tags, sharing websites and other content.

You will see in the video how the demonstration shows just how easily the Windows 8 table picks up the tags' presence and then reads it with no trouble at all. NXP worked with Microsoft to get the NFC drivers up to speed for the Build Conference. By the looks of it, they aced the sharing and reading capabilities in the Samsung Windows 8 NFC tablet.
