Card Queen - Roman Chaliy
Duela Dent, Card Queen
So this is a three issue story, taking place across Batman Family #19 and Detective Comics #482 and #483, in 1978 and 1979, several months after the end of Duela’s Teen Titans run.
Duela appears only briefly, and only as a civilian, in Batman Family #19, talking to Dick after he has a run-in with his ex and her new boyfriend.
On to Detective Comics!
Here we meet the Card Queen, a new villain pretending to be a hero.
The plan is going well until she encounters Robin.
That’s a lot of card puns. But the critical one is next:
After this encounter with Robin, she disappears off the head bad guys’ radars.
And now we move on to the next issue of Detective Comics. Duela’s appearance comes at the very end, after Robin’s spent an issue doing detective work, and arrives at bad guy headquarters to deal with things.
Card Queen immediately betrays her team to help Robin.
Recruited for evil because of her parentage, Duela took the opportunity to work as a double agent.
I really love this story. I love how the bad guys assumed that Duela would be bad because her dad was, and she used it against them. I love how well Duela and Robin work together, and that they seem to be good friends, even after the Titans have disbanded.
I don’t love how our two civilian Duela’s over this story arc (1st image and last image) aren’t really recognizable as the same person. But with Duela, you take what you can get.
This is the last time that the 70s era Duela will appear. It’s not our last post for 70s Duela, as she has a few smaller appearances I haven’t covered yet. But everything else is in ‘78; this last Card Queen story was published in May of ‘79.

You're really really sweet and I enjoy following you. I also really, really enjoy your art and would love to draw something for you, if you'd like. (My favourite picture is that Black Fang picture with Nino -- It's so cute! I really love it)
Aw, thanks! You’re making me blush here~ ^u^
I’m rather new on tumblr, so I was initially nervous about being on here, but the nice reception from people has made me so happy!
Your art is also pretty good, and I like your unique style~ I’d love to see more of your art, and if you’re fine, I would ask you to draw Nino with Raigh and Lugh!
