Mycroft was standing just before the door, nervous energy buzzing within him as he shifted the box of chocolates behind him. It was a traditional gift for Valentine's Day, he knew, but it also wasn't the main reason he had left that morning. Though he had made up an excuse about needing to meet with someone about work, he was really out to pick up two plane tickets for a round trip to the Caribbean. That was the biggest part of what he had done for Greg for the holiday.
Taking a deep breath, he forced his nervousness aside and opened the door to the flat. "I'm home, love," he called, closing the door behind him. Toeing his shoes off, he walked in, looking around for his lover.

//Both of you have given me some sort of indication that you want to do the Christmas 'relationship announcement' thing, so I'm going to work up a starter sometime in the next couple of days.
And I'm thinking the order will be Mycroft, then the Holmes parents, then Greg. I've thought on this for a while, and I think this is the way to go about it.
Once again, let me know what you think.
So, this is a thing that happened because one of my friends prompted me with a different angle on the timer AU. They did it with the intention of making painful (succeeded at that part because it even hurt to write) but I couldn't let the idea go so I drabbled.
He didn't understand why it had to be so festive. So the Earth had gone around the sun twenty times since he had come into existence. Big deal. But his mother insisted upon having a huge celebration for his twentieth birthday, so Mycroft had no choice except to grin and bear it.
"Come on, Mycie. We all have gifts for you," Violet, his mother, said as she guided him toward the table with presents on it. "Even Sherlock got something for you. John has been such a good influence for him. I'm so glad their timers were synced."
"Well, I should think the universe would know what it's doing," Mycroft pointed out, sparing a glance at the timer on his wrist.
"Speaking of, Mycie, how much time do you have left?"
"A month." After twenty years, a month was no time at all, and Mycroft found himself growing excited at the thought of finally meeting the one he was destined to be with.
Violet smiled, sensing her son's excitement. "Well, get to the gifts then. Everyone's waiting," she prompted.
"Oh. Of course." He pulled up a chair, starting to open the gifts.
Partway through, Mycroft's wrist started to sting, causing him to flinch and whack it on the table. He shook it out, blaming it on a pinched nerve, and kept on opening the gifts.
It was only when he was reaching into the next to last bag that he heard his mother gasp. He looked up, curious, only to see that she was staring at him, a mixed look of shock and despair on her face.
"What?"
"Oh, Mycie... Your wrist..."
Confused, he looked down at his wrist. His timer, instead of showing 736:45:28, like it should have at that point, all it showed was - -:- -:- -. His eyes widened and he froze up. He stared at it for a good three minutes before slowly looking up at his mother. "Mummy..." His voice was quiet; broken.
Violet walked over, pulling her son into a tight embrace. "Come with me." She led him to a different room, sitting down on the couch with him. "Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry. Are you going to be all right?"
"I... No. I don't know. I thought... I thought this was impossible."
"Nothing's impossible, dear, as unfortunate as that is. Though this," she gestured to his wrist, "is extremely rare."
"But if we were destined to be together, then...why would this happen? How could it happen?"
"Ultimately, we all have some control over our destinies. That's why Sherlock's timer changed. Because he made the choice to go to a different university than the one we were expecting him to go to. That way, he met John years before he was originally meant to." Violet sighed, taking Mycroft's hands in her own. "In your case, whoever you were meant to be with must have been really stressed out and just overwhelmed with life, and I guess they thought the only way out was to end it all..."
Mycroft squeezed his eyes shut, breath labored as he tried to stay calm. Compared to others, he had waited so long to meet his soul mate, so to have this happen as he was finally getting close to meeting them... It was absolutely soul-crushing.
"I don't think I'm going to be able to celebrate my birthday anymore." Opening his eyes, he moved closed to his mother, leaning in and resting his head on her shoulder. He felt her arm go around his shoulders, holding him closely and firmly. "I never got to meet them, and today of all days, they're gone."
He wanted to be mad at them, but he couldn't. It wasn't their fault. So he turned his anger to the world for treating them so badly that they couldn't see any other way out.
"I just wish I knew who they were..." he muttered. His eyes were welling up now, and he could feel a lump forming in his throat. He swallowed thickly, trying to blink away the tears. "What they were like..." His lip was quivering, and he knew he couldn't fight it any longer. Mycroft let out a soft sob, trying to keep quiet since there were other people in the house.
Even with his mother there to soothe him, it took him a long time to stop crying and calm down.
"Are you alright now, sweetie?" Violet asked as Mycroft sat up straight again.
"...No. Not really. But I'll manage."
"I'm dying and you can't stop it." [situation in which Greg has a terminal illness, you can decide what illness or I can]
"No…. No, no, don’t say that. With medical science as advanced as it is, surely there’s a way to stop this."

//I had this thought today about how Mycroft is dating Greg now, and about how he would have to inform his parents eventually, and I felt like Mycroft would decide to bring Greg along for Christmas and officially announce it then. I say officially because I have the feeling that the Holmes parents would have their suspicions when Mycroft calls to ask if Greg can come along.
Anyway, I was wondering if the three of us could maybe do a thread along those lines. And this seemed like the easiest way to get the message out to both of you, so let me know what you think and I can work on getting something started if we go ahead with it.

Mycroft was standing in the abandoned warehouse where he liked to perform his ‘trust exercises’, watching the Detective Inspector walk up to him from the car he had been brought in, when his wrist started to sting a little. Folding the sleeve up to be able to see his timer, he was shocked to see that it had hit zero.
"Oh." Looking up from his wrist to the other man, he could tell that the situation was indeed what it appeared to be. "Well. It’s nice to finally meet you." Back when he was first told about the meaning of the timer, all of the people his age had timers that were really low, or at least at a decent amount. But his said he would have to wait a long time, so eventually he assumed it had just broken somehow.

"Though it's entirely possible my opinion could change. I don't know how power changes you yet, Inspector."
