Carden: "I wouldn't have made the bargain with Mircalla if I didn't. I mean, I sort of thought Maritza was it, so that fucking sucks. Maybe she was. Maybe I'll find someone else. I don't know. But I do believe in it."

Fen: "Hmmm... interesting question. I don't know. I believe in familial true love and platonic true love. I don't know how I feel about the idea of romantic true love, though. Seems almost too good to be true."

Liam: "I don't think it's at all surprising that I'm a romantic sap. Also you should meet my parents. If that's not true love, I don't know what is."

Seth: "I haven't experienced it personally, but I believe it exists. I don't know if everyone finds it or if some people find something close enough and are happy with that."

Talon: "I don't think so. I guess it depends how we're defining it. Something about the idea of it just kind... it feels like it implies love is easy, y'know? But if you love someone, you've gotta be willing to put in the work. And you've gotta feel like it's worth the work."

The Patron

Carden met Mircalla when she was a junior in college. They had two of their classes together and it was a friendship initially born of mutual convenience. They both needed study buddies and since they already had multiple classes together, it made sense to study together. They hit it off quickly, finding similar senses of humor and an easy companionship.

Carden wonders how much of it was real. Certainly, Mircalla wasn’t actually trying to get a degree in anything. So what else was a lie? She doesn’t think she’ll ever know.

When Maritza got sick, Mircalla was there for her and Carden was so grateful for her support.

Grateful still, when things got worse and Carden got desperate and Mircalla offered her a deal.

Magic for service, for the promise that she would use her powers to help Mircalla. And Carden so desperately wanted to heal the love of her life, so she didn’t ask nearly as many questions as she should, didn’t even feel the betrayal of discovering her friend and confidant had entered her life hoping to make this deal until much, much later.

It didn’t pan out, of course. It was a sketchy decision and Maritza couldn’t support that choice. So she left Carden. And now, Carden’s doing whatever little favors her old friend requests, because that was the bargain struck. Sometimes, when she talks to her patron, she almost feels the old friendship there, but then she remembers the situation and the feeling vanishes.

Abilities: granting magic—for a price, material astral projection.

Goals: They are… stuck somewhere and would very much like to get out. Maybe get some revenge in the process, but freedom and access to the rest of their magic is the main priority. Hopefully one of the people they’ve granted magic will eventually be strong enough to break the spell trapping them.

some recent thoughts about the entity carden made her deal with:

she knew them, long before she ever made the deal. she thought they were friends.

when the dust settled with maritza and she had time to process the agreement she’d made, it kind of hurt her to know they’d invested that time in the hopes of making a deal.

they’re a shapeshifter of sorts, able to take on whatever form best suits them for the situation.

Part 3 of 3 and we’re finishing out with Carden.

27. How does your character normally deal with confrontation?

She handles it. Carden is a ‘take no shit’ kind of person and she will not hesitate to throw the first punch, metaphorically and literally. She’s also someone who wants to find a reasonable solution, though, so it’s not a reckless sort of impulse. If a nonviolent solution is more viable, she’ll go that way, but she’s definitely not someone who avoids conflict or confrontation.

35. How does your character behave around people they like?

She’s pretty smooth tbh. It’s been a long time since someone’s caught her eye tho. She’s a little bit still in love with Maritza and part of her probably always will be.

43. Has your character ever had a dependent figure who was not related to them?

Lmaooooo no. And pls do not give her one she’d be terrible at it. She’s more of a role model of what not to do than what to do.
