Scenic Fic Request: Ingo & Emmet + video games

I hope I formatted this correctly, and I'm excited to see what you write, enjoy!

Fate verrry much existed, and it manifested itself in a basement on a hot summer day.

Confused? Don't be. For you see, the thing about growing up in the quiet Anville Town was that Ingo and Emmet didn't have many kids in the neighborhood close to their age.

Or any other kids around at all, really.

Their neighbors were sweet, make no mistake! Not only that but they were each other's own best friend and thus their greatest playmates as well. A bucket full of chalk and an open expanse of canvas that was the sidewalk entertained them plenty in their youth. And they loved living so close to the rail yard, with the source of all their hopes and dreams situated just a quick walk away.

But they couldn't deny that it got lonely, on occasion.

That was where video games came in. Not just because it gave something for Ingo and Emmet to do during their free time on hot summer days where it was unbearable to stay outside for long, but because it connected them to other people their age. They'd make a whole day of it, taking a subway ride to Castelia City to entertain themselves in an internet café with like minded peers.

Eventually, Ingo and Emmet started to appear often enough that they got invited to their first ever LAN Party. How excited they had been, practically vibrating out of their skin at the thought that they could go over to someone's house to hang out instead of lounging about in the yard aimlessly or chatting idly with Constance, the old woman who gave them sweets every time they swung by her porch.

Using their allowance money they bought a case of energy drinks to bring with them and chipped in for the pizza order that they had been told would inevitably happen.

It was a brilliant site, that basement. Every single outlet and surge protector full, cables expertly and haphazardly strewn about to make sure that everyone in the room could connect their CRTs to a completely maxed out network. Looking back, the graphics weren't the best (although for the time they had been verrry impressed) and the screens pretty lousy, but the joy the two twins had seated beside one another as their friends sat across, all huddled together made the experience the best one they had ever had.

Rotating fans pushed air around that basement, with music playing in the background as everyone chatted and ribbed one another. Emmet asked Ingo if he planned on actually winning a match for once at the same time that Ingo asked Emmet whether or not he planned getting better aim.

Playing the game really wasn't what they were really there for, at the end of the day. The twins didn't hold so much attachment to the FPS as some of the others attending the party, although they certainly enjoyed getting a chance to play it since they didn't have a PC at home.

What they treasured most though was the inviting atmosphere the other players created, getting to laugh at hearing a scream from halfway across the room, or leaning forward on their folding chairs to focus on assisting their teammate. When food arrived, they grabbed a plate and playfully fought over yet another slice. They gorged on snacks and hyped themselves up on sugar, knowing that the next morning they would feel like garbage but in Emmet's own words, it was always, "Worth it!" Then it would be right back to playing, nearly shoulder to shoulder once again.

By the end of that night they confidently had made more than a handful of friends and received yet another invite to the next month's party. It was such a present and essential aspect of their late teenage years and even a little bit into college before all of them drifted apart to focus on their studies. A bit of a hard pill to swallow at the time, but that was life. Like two parting trains, sometimes people were in your life briefly before moving on. What mattered most was that they held fond memories of those simpler times and the ones they spent it with.

But then fate worked its magic, and their LAN buddies Cloud and Ramsey—the two who had first approached Ingo and Emmet at that internet café to invite them over to Isadore's basement—greeted them with a 'Welcome!' banner on their first day of being appointed to Subway Boss. They had been stunned, shocked even, but sure enough they had all wound up in the same place once again. It was funny how small the world was, or at least, the twins thought it was.

After catching up on their lives since their time spent in front of old picture tubes and tangled in cables, it was clear that Ingo and Emmet had some order of business to get through as their first act as boss.

They needed to invite the younger Depot Agents over to one of their apartments for a LAN Party.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

Oh this is such a hard one because I'm the type of person who says, "This was my favorite bit/gag/section!" in every single fic. But there is one fic that is so infamous in my mind that I must choose from. My favorite little landmine of a passage:

Somewhen, far in the future, a solitary Subway Boss stood in his subway car alone waiting for a trainer to make it to him.

And with his thoughts wandering in boredom, Emmet remembered something.

"Son of a gun," he cursed to himself. In all of the grief that he felt for his missing twin, that had been the furthest thing from his mind. But, well, it always did come up at the most inopportune moment.

And as he always said, Emmet had to follow the rules.

So he announced to the empty cab, "I just lost the game."
