Posted @withregram • @hospicedoctorswidow Sometimes, as a #CEO I got help from some indirect or unlikely sources – perhaps a vendor or community leader whose organization or business had a stake or general interest in my organization doing well. Or sometimes just letting a friend know of a challenging situation, yielded help. This is one place where people's overwhelming desire to #FixIt can be parlayed into #Delegation and #HelpingHands. Don’t forget your #CareRecipient ’s #Friends. When my mother was dying of cancer, I was her #Caregiver. She had a number of close friends who just came forward one after another. Some helped in communicating with other friends that I did not know how to get in touch with. Sometimes her friends sat with my mother when I needed a break. Just think about friends, yours and your Care Recipient’s, their strengths and interests and how that might fit a situational need. Posted @withregram • @hospicedoctorswidow A brother or sister who does not help with the #Caregiving of a parent, when and how you need them to, is no less a son or daughter of the #CareRecipient. It’s a frustration akin to a board member to doesn’t show to the meetings or plays on his/her mobile device throughout a long, involved issue discussion and then wants everything to stop just before the important vote because they need more information. One sad difference is family doesn’t rotate off like board members do. These are challenging aspects of the #CaregiverAsCEO position when you must facilitate, inspire, finesse, perhaps even manipulate (a little) to get the participation you need or at least minimize the disruption or paralysis resulting from the lack of participation. Here again, sharing (repeatedly if necessary) the #Mission and #Vision and perhaps the #Mantra should help a lot. CEOs share the Mission and Vision over and over. It is part of leadership. Sharing Mission and Vision helps people feel a part of something. Future posts on the powers of effective #Communication and #Feedback will also help with facilitating helpful participation from others. Posted @withregram • @hospicedoctorswidow Effective CEOs may set and achieve ambitious goals but they do not commit to accomplishing the impossible or make promises they may not be able to keep. #Caregivers do NOT make promises you may not be able to keep. For examples: Do not promise your #CareRecipient Recipient that you will never admit them to a care facility. Do not promise your Care Recipient they will die at home. Do not promise your Care Recipient you will always be there. In fact, stay away from the words “always” and “never” when discussing the future. You might think well, my Care Recipient has advanced dementia, so they won’t remember if I make a promise and I am not able to keep it. Here’s the thing, YOU will remember that you made a promise and did not keep it. And right there, you may have put the portion of your #Vision that is your own emotionally and mentally healthy future into jeopardy. #CaregiverAsCEO doesn’t make promises they may not be able to keep. Alternatively say, “I understand that is a priority; together, we will do everything in our power to _______.” With this phrasing, you are: acknowledging to your person that you understand their desire and goal; including their participation by using “we;” and not putting it all on yourself. Having done both jobs – CEO and Family Caregiving – I can tell you first and last that they are both challenging positions and #FamilyCaregiving is the more difficult of the two. Mission and Vision for Family Caregiving, however, is more universal than for companies or organizations. Family Caregiver Mission: ensure safety, nourishment, hygiene, companionship, advocacy, access, and care for my person, the #CareRecipient . Vision: continued mission, a comfortable; dignified end of life for care recipient; a smooth transition from caregiver to griever; and an emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy future for me, the Family Caregiver. CEOs and Family Caregivers see the now and the future and actively tend to both. Whether your care recipient has a chronic, degenerative condition or a more acutely terminal condition, they will likely precede you in death. At the end of life comes death. There are no do-overs in end of life. Changed forever, loved ones remain and remember. As a caregiver, you are managing the now and the future, your future. Page 18 in my book, The Hospice Doctor’s Widow: A Journal says: “We are going through two different processes. He is dying. I am surviving.” Those two processes were entwined, no doubt. Yet, my late husband, Bob, and I were headed toward two different futures. I had to manage how I was going to feel in the future, after his death. Similarly, the Mission requires the Family Caregiver tend to their own well-being.
