Serenade for Haiti
“Filmed over a seven-year period in Haiti, this documentary feature film captures a rare look at a country scored with poverty and a history of political violence and finds a story of transcendence and great humanity as the children and faculty of the Sainte Trinité Music School turn to music to unlock the power of their own lives.
When a catastrophic earthquake completely destroys the school in 2010, a stunned and devastated faculty and student body must pick up the pieces and find a way to adapt. Devotion to each other and to the possibilities that the future still holds for them are expressed in the footage of children rehearsing in the rubble and in the rich musical heritage they have inherited.
Journeying into Haiti’s beautiful and diverse rural regions and venturing deep into the streets of Port-au-Prince before and after the 2010 earthquake, Serenade for Haiti brings to the screen an unforgettable and vivid tableau of this widely misunderstood country. The soundtrack features the stunning music of Haiti's great composers who until this time have been largely unknown to international audiences.“
Papa Machete
"Papa Machete" is a glimpse into the life of Alfred Avril, an aging subsistence farmer who lives in the hills of Jacmel, Haiti. He also happens to be a master of the mysterious martial art of Haitian machete fencing, also known as Tire Machèt. Teaching about the practical and spiritual value of the machete—which is both a weapon and a farmer’s key to survival—Avril provides a bridge between his country’s traditional past and its troubled present. The film documents his proud devotion to his heritage and his struggle to keep it alive in the face of contemporary globalization.” via Vimeo link

“”Maroons” are people of African descent who were able to escape from enslavement during the transatlantic slave trade. The Maroons created free societies (villages), hidden in thick densely forested regions that they protected with their lives in order to ensure that they would never be caught and forced to return to the plantations from which they escaped. While most people have no idea that such places ever existed, even fewer people realize that some of the villages still exist to this day. The village of Palenque San Basilio in Colombia, South America (Palenque), the first of such places in the world, was established in 1603 when Benkos Bioho, who was transported to Colombia as part of the South American Slave trade, rebelled and obtained his freedom and the freedom of over thirty other enslaved people. This documentary focuses on Palenquero identity, relationships, music, culture, and what this group may be able to contribute toward making humanity better. The film also highlights some of the challenges that Palenqueros are experiencing as villagers begin to rely more on the nearest metropolitan city (Cartagena) for jobs and resources.” via Vimeo page.

Jamaica for Sale
“The Caribbean is the region most economically dependent on tourism and Jamaica is the 4th most indebted country in the world. Tourism is Jamaica's Sacred Cow, heavily promoted since 1891 as the way to modernization and prosperity it has tragically failed in its promises. Jamaica For Sale counters the dominant view that tourism is the savior of the Jamaican people. Lively and hard hitting, with powerful voices, arresting visuals and iconic music, Jamaica For Sale documents the environmental, economic, social and cultural impacts of unsustainable tourism development. As Jamaica is irreversibly transformed by massive hotel and luxury condominium development, Jamaica For Sale both documents this transformation and is trying to turn the tide.” via
