Right now they're doing a second round of their campaign "My TRUTH, My STORY" in which they ask members of their community to speak up about their experiences with racism, anti-immigration efforts, and homophobia from a deeply personal level. I've been so incredibly moved by these stories, and feel strongly that folks with this level of bravery and insight - and VISION - are the ones who will truly get us through our current national disaster. If you would be able to help out by donating or sharing with family, friends, co-workers, followers, anyone - it would mean a ton to me and the folks of CEP. I'd ESPECIALLY like to ask my White followers and straight followers to donate and spread the word about this fundraiser and campaign because it is up to the people with more power and privilege to dismantle racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. Representation matters and it's up to us to make sure they are represented in the media, and this is a way to do that. The Caribbean Equality Project (CEP) was born after a family in Richmond Hill, Queens experienced a hate crime and decided to organize to address that trauma and help empower and heal LGBTQ folks in the community at large. CEP’s mission is to promote social change, awareness, and acceptance by empowering and strengthening the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people of Caribbean descent in the New York area. They are creating a sustainable and progressive community free of violence and all forms of discrimination and oppression by: promoting visibility and empowerment through advocacy, community organizing, public education, cultural and social programming. This year Caribbean activists in Canada reached out to partner with CEP to bring their LGBTQ/Caribbean community activism there as part of a conference, "Breaking Silences", a one-day symposium focused on immigration, HIV/AIDS, family acceptance, faith and the mental health of Caribbean LGBTQ communities, with presentations, panel discussions, and clinics -- including confidential HIV testing and counseling, confidential mental health counseling/intervention, and immigration consultations. THIS FUNDRAISER IS A CHANCE FOR A REAL, TANGIBLE ACT OF SOLIDARITY TOWARD OUR LGBTQ AND CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY IN QUEENS. The money is to pay for some of the needs of the conference, including food for the $100+ attendees. Please consider a donation. Even $5 helps!

In a landmark verdict, Trinidad’s high court judge, Devindra Rampersad ruled that Sections 13 and 16 of the country’s Sexual Offences Act, which criminalizes same-sex intimacy is UNCONSTITUTIONAL and contrary to the laws of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Meet Krishna, LGBTQ & HIV/AIDS activist
Krishna Ramsarran is a native of Guyana but was raised in Richmond Hill, Queens and has been involved in community organizing since 2010 advocating for the Caribbean LGBTQ Community. He’s an author, HIV/AIDS activist and program director at the Caribbean Equality Project. He is a recent graduate of the New York City Anti-Violence Project’s “Speakers Bureau” leadership program. Krishna is trained to provide education and support for survivors of violence to share their stories to educate the public about how to prevent violence, and what to do if they or someone they love is affected by anti-LGBTQ & HIV-affected violence. Krishna’s pioneer HIV activism includes collaborating with community leaders and community-based organizations to raise awareness about the intersection of the LGBTQ & HIV-affected identity and violence through coalitions, networks and other collaborative work. He continues to advocate and speak out on behalf of Caribbean LGBTQ people living with HIV/AIDS giving a face to the virus in situations when few have done so or were unable.
