Today we commemorate Contract Day aka “FiyahBu’n”. Led by Virgin Islands’ heroines Bottom Belly, Queen Agnes, Queen Mathilda and of course the infamous Queen Mary! . The revolt that started on October 1, 1878 and lasted several days after laborers gathered on Frederiksted to demand higher wages. Although slavery had been abolished legally for 30 years, the people were very much living under slave-like conditions. . After the revolt had ended Queen Mary was sentenced to serve jail time in Denmark. .
