Today we commemorate Contract Day aka “FiyahBu’n”. Led by Virgin Islands’ heroines Bottom Belly, Queen Agnes, Queen Mathilda and of course the infamous Queen Mary! . The revolt that started on October 1, 1878 and lasted several days after laborers gathered on Frederiksted to demand higher wages. Although slavery had been abolished legally for 30 years, the people were very much living under slave-like conditions. . After the revolt had ended Queen Mary was sentenced to serve jail time in Denmark. . In un mondo dove non si ha più tempo per conoscere le persone, abbiamo bisogno di apparire con la maschera che la società ci impone, puntiamo tutto su quella assurda "prima impressione". Ma c'è un periodo, ogni anno, dove i più coraggiosi possono davvero farsi vedere come sono senza doversi nascondere dietro quella maschera. Ed è assurdo che ora, per essere ciò che davvero sei, devi indossare una maschera che ti rappresenti a pieno. Amo in Carnevale. Perché è libero. Perché almeno, per una volta all'anno, io posso essere davvero chi sono, senza dare peso al giudizio altrui. Amo il carnevale, perché i folli escono per strada e si prendono il proprio spazio.
