I think this probably happens in any caring profession but it seems especially prevalent in teaching - the idea that unless you're giving everything to the job/children you don't care.
This is an incredibly toxic mindset for lots of reasons, and it's honestly also bad for the kids.
In my experience, teachers who manage to have a life outside of teaching are happier and more relaxed in school. The kids respond to them better. They also last longer.
If you're losing sleep to plan lessons, or working yourself to the point of exhaustion regularly, you will burn out - and that sudden burn out where people will often disappear temporarily or permanently without warning is terrible for the kids. It's really damaging for lots of reasons.
So don't get to that point. Look after yourself. Care, but don't give everything. It'll mean you can't do everything today, but it also means there's a much higher chance you'll be here in six months, a year, five years.
