Hi! I'm new to IASIP, I started it 2 weeks ago and I'm already at s8. I'm totally in love with Mac's struggle to realize he's gay. As a bi, I was amazed how the writers managed to create a character that has a real struggle to find his sexuality and actually takes a decade to start realize something. What I'm afraid for is that i know on S12 we're back on square one. Do you think this as a form of queerbaiting? I don't wanna fall for another show that ends up tricking LGBT people :(

Hi! Well if theres anyone i trust with macs story line its rcg ya know? Because first of all, theyve proven themselves to really care about this stuff, especially rob. So i dont think theyd be the type to suddenly backtrack and start being assholes to their lgbt audience.Also its just not how theyve written this story so far you know? Its not an exploitation of a will-they-wont-they vibe between two straight characters. Mac is 100% Confirmed For Gay and dennis (as well as the rest of the gang) is at least not straight according to rcg themselves. Also lets compare it to the shows that actually do this like idk..,, supernatural and sherlock? The writers of those shows probably know they have a huuuge audience expecting and hoping and waiting for two characters to smooch so they string them along to keep them watching. Sunny....doesnt? I mean a lot of the sunny audience is still reddit user bros who think dennis is a psychopathic serial killer ya know? Theres no need for rcg to exploit this part of their audience to keep their numbers up, if that makes sense. not that they would. they r good ppl. i trust them.I do understand that it feels like its back to square one (god knows we all felt that for a while after s11) but like, the whole point is that the characters never grow or change. Even after everything they shouldve learned from theyre still stuck in a state of arrested development (hey! thats the name of the show!)idk man i really dont think thats a thing to worry about here. But im a straight girl so im not gonna speak for other lgbt sunny fans here who might also feel that this is an issue.

When it comes to fanfiction there's a line to be drawn, fanfictions CAN be dark and i'm all for them! especially if they fit the tone of the show but when it comes to sunny some dark fics tend to romanticize topics that RCG are against romanticizing such as: drug abuse (not talking about weed), rape, incest. Yes rape is mentioned 19189329 times in the show, but it is never NEVER romanticized, and I think some dark fanfics are written as if rape was something "hot" and "romantic" and that's wrong

Let me preface this by saying that this is not directed specifically at you, but to the Sunny fandom because I’ve seen some shit around here. 

Okay, let’s get into it. 

Who gets to decide that line? Is it you? Is it me? Is it arbitrary tumblr user #423196? 

When it comes to fanfiction there is an understanding that somehow got lost in fandom these past few years: Fiction is not reality. And what someone enjoys in fiction should never be confused for what they condone in real life. Fiction exists so people can explore the darker aspects of the reality we live in, without facing the actual consequences of those things. You are not allowed to take that away from anybody. 

Fic readers are expected to understand that fiction is not reality, and that views expressed in fics are not necessarily those of the author. 

That means if I watch Game of Thrones, I’m not going to suddenly decide to go bang my sister. If I read Romeo and Juliet, I’m not going to think double suicide is suddenly a great idea. Do you think Shakespeare advocated for familicide or incest because he wrote about it? Do you think Stephen King supports cannibalism or murder or rape or necrophilia?

You are allowed to dislike any trope or kink or fic or pairing. But you are not allowed to police what other people like or create. And I don’t care what you think it fetishizes. It’s not up to you to decide what or why a person writes when it’s fiction. 

Fandom was never meant to be a safe space. Nor should it be. Tags and warnings are there for a reason. Police your own content. You are not allowed to police anyone else’s. You don’t have to like it. You don’t have to read it. Block it. Use blacklist. The little red X in the corner of your screen? That’s your safe word. 

DO NOT: 

Harass someone because you don’t agree with something they write.

Attack someone’s moral fiber because you don’t like their fiction.

Shame them for their content when their power to influence the world through fiction is no greater than your own. 

There are many pairings and tropes in this fandom that I don’t like. But I’m not going to go around telling people who they can and can’t ship, or what they are and are not allowed to write. Harassing people out of the fandom is not going to make bad things stop happening in real life, and this bullshit moral judgment does nothing except lead us down the dangerous road to censorship.

So I’ll ask again, who gets to decide that line? Who gets this power of regulating fictional content? Who gets to decide that this fic with [problematic issue] is okay because it was written a certain way, but this other fic is wrong because it might be construed as romanticizing it?

It’s certainly not me. 

And when it comes to AO3 or tumblr dot com, it’s definitely not RCG. I don’t give a shit what they’re against, I’m not asking them to put it in their show.

You are certainly not alone in this and I agree 100%. But unfortunately, it seems the popular opinion around here is that Dennis bottoms and will only ever bottom, which is such a strange and weird thing to fixate on. And what must clearly follow from this is a fan narrative that has Dennis’ best friend ‘taking care of him’ and this all kind of gets… pushed onto Mac.

It’s laughable given the canon evidence that Mac clearly likes to take it. Mac’s type is not Dennis. He likes beefcakes. Ripped dudes who can throw him around a bit. He literally built himself a fisting machine and he was so damn proud of himself for it. 

I’m proud of him too.
