Connor had so far held fast to his refusal to let Harmony and Brendon out of his sight - or at least, out of the apartment without him - and he was currently hoping to be able to enjoy a lazy morning in bed with his wife, and Lady Fluffball, of course. He rolled over when he heard her wake up, “Good morning, beautiful.” he said before leaning in to give her a quick kiss and turning his attention briefly to the small bump on her stomach, “And good morning to you too, Jessie.” he added with a grin before settling himself in just to look at her. “How long do you think we can get away with the hermit act? Cause honestly, I’m really enjoying it.”
Connor had been surprised to get the text from his wife saying that she wanted to talk, he would have been worried if she hadn’t also insisted he didn’t need to worry. Even so, he was too curious to wait much longer and had quickly headed back to the apartment as soon as he finished his class, wondering what she might have to say that needed to be said in person but wasn’t bad. Maybe there was some kind of surprise? But it wasn’t his birthday quite yet, so he didn’t think that really made sense. As he headed up to their apartment, he couldn’t help tossing ideas around in his head. He let himself inside, pausing briefly to pet the animals that rushed to greet him before calling for his wife, “Hey! I’m home! You said you wanted to talk?”

Some books written or edited by Neil B. Carmony [Dexter K Oliver photo]“It used to be that a writer was a person of some renown,
but nowadays that position slipped to the lowest one in town”

Author and friend Dexter Oliver emailed me this morning and said he happened to come across a notice on the internet about his old friend and writing mentor, Neil Carmony,…
WHAT: Connor returns home after visiting hours ended at the hospital to find a large amount of Harmony’s things gone, and a letter from his wife on the nightstand.
WHEN: Late last night/early morning
WHERE: The Andrews apartment
Connor was exhausted. He could own that. Every aspect of his life outside of the hospital - including getting himself to and from - took place in the eight hours he wasn’t allowed to be sitting with his daughter. Tonight, he was ready to just collapse into bed In four or so hours, he’d deal with showering, eating, working on the nursery. Right now he wanted sleep. Unfortunately, the second he opened his bedroom door, he knew that something was wrong.
Things were missing. Important things. Pictures, mementos, Harmony’s favorite pillow ... and others were strewn on the floor. His heart was instantly in his throat even before he spotted the note on his nightstand. Shaking, he stepped forward to read it and he collapsed onto the bed beside him before he had even gotten threw a few words.
She was gone. She had left him. Everything was all finally too much.
He knew that something had been wrong, he knew it. But all he could think of was that he had to be there for Eliana if she wasn’t, that Harmony would be okay once they were all home but ... clearly he had been very, very wrong. The letter was frantic, rushed, rambling about how she couldn’t do it anymore. Couldn’t be a mother, couldn’t be his wife. It was too much. He felt like his entire world had been ripped out from under him. She didn’t even say where she was going, and her cell phone had been sitting beside the letter.
He read it over again, twice, then three and four times, just trying to make some sense of it all as tears ran freely down his face. What was he going to do now? He had never even imagined a world in which his wife could willingly leave him. How did he be a dad, all on his own? How did he be him anymore, when she had been such a huge part of him? How did he keep going?
