The fact also remains that the sale and distribution of marijuana remains illegal under federal law, which puts insurers in a tricky spot. Professionals with ties to the marijuana field — doctors, lawyers, accountants among them — have been threatened with license revocation despite operating within the bounds of their own state laws. Federal prosecutors continue to go after growers and dispensaries in the 23 states where medical marijuana is legal.
