The Ideal X- Week 2
Although the second week of The Ideal X continues a deeper exploration into our shipping containers, it is clear the creativity of our students cannot be ‘contained!’ We began the day with a presentation from Carolina about her work as an artist. Feeling inspired, everyone then found their mini containers from last week and received a new shipping container blueprint. This time, instead of maps, we constructed mock ups!
Students built on the images, texts, and resources they encountered last week to plan how they will design shipping containers that will fit together to form a collaborative sculpture. Some worked together in teams, challenging themselves to think in three dimensions while sketching on a flat surface. Carolina and David moved around the table discussing concepts ranging from goldfish crackers to immigration.
As we wrapped up, students took a few moments to write short artist statements. Sharing out, we heard the creativity and diversity of each individual project. It was also clear that two especially meaningful themes dominate The Ideal X- environmental issues and migration issues. The story continues next week- see you then!
Carolina Caycedo Residency: October 14 – Dec 20, 2013 Exhibition: Be Dammed
BE DAMMED is a research-based project that explores concepts of Flow and Containment, particularly looking at the interrelations between the planning and construction of large water dams/reservoirs, and mechanisms of social control. In the next three years I want to focus on three case studies: The currently under-construction hydro-electric dams of Quimbo and Hidroituango (Colombia), and Belo-Monte (Brasil).
The continuos documentation over time of these large constructions, permits visualizing the effects of mega-infrastructures over the natural and social landscapes; on a local and global scale. Electricity produced will mostly be exported. The molding of nature is the molding of society.
Carolina Caycedo Residency: October 14 – Dec 20, 2013 Exhibition: Be Dammed
Carolina Caycedo engages with issues and contexts that affect a broad public on an everyday level: in her work, art functions as a pretext for offering up utopian models to inhabit a world in which individuals and communities are increasingly subject to com-modification, exploitation, and discrimination. As part of the colombian art collective Colectivo Cambalache, she helped conceive the project Museo de la calle (1999–2002) — an ambulatory and constantly shifting archive of objects initially collected by barterin in one of the city’s most marginal neighborhoods and then circulated and displayed around Bogotá and eventually abroad.
