Facts:

Up until recently, Yva worked for the Heflongull company in the back office. It took many years for Yva to understand just how corrupt the owners of those stores were and are. 

Working for one of the biggest companies of the galaxy, Yva expected the business practices not to be pristine. After curiously reading through some files that an executive carelessly left out, Yva took some pictures and started to put the pieces together about the company’s dark secrets and how they exploited struggling economies.

Based on everything that Yva knew about the Heflongull company, it was clear that nobody there could understand the carrek’s reasons for leaving. Yva waited five months so that quitting wouldn’t look too suspicious, and then put in a month’s notice. Thus far, nobody has chased Yva down, so everything sounds like it’s in the clear.

While earth media piracy was illegal, it wasn’t remotely the same as the cruelty of the Beersoz-Heflongull. Yva went on a vacation to an outpost planet called Naboo, and learned that several pirate ships that had passed through were hiring. The idea of a little more freedom and autonomy within the structure of a ship sounded great, so Yva applied for a job with one of the ships, and got it.

Even before the life-changing discovery of how corrupt the Heflongull company was, Yva has always been secretive and private. Knowing how to keep one’s mouth shut, keep that head down and act docile can serve a pretty office worker well in the workplace.

Yva has not been completely candid with the rest of the crew about work history. They all know their new clerk worked for a big company, but not which company.

Connections:

Daphne Rux: While hiring Yva, Daphne privately pressed to inquire about the exact company that the clerk had previously worked for. Yva said that it was Heflongull, and Daphne said that she could guess at the apprehension that it took to reveal this. Daphne promised never to be the one to tell the rest of the crew what the company was unless Yva did first.

Taylor Vusbrun: Yva and Taylor don’t get along at all. Both are new to the ship, but every conversation tends to turn into a competition. Something about how these two relate to each other leads to bickering that can be exhausting for the rest of the crew to deal with.

Ever Mysik: Both of them remember having a conversation at a bar on Sturn in 1987. Yva was at a bachelorette party, and Ever’s pirate crew at the time was docked there. The two of them talked for twenty-five minutes about David Bowie, the struggle with living up to the expectations of others, and snack foods. It was a profoundly pleasant conversation, and they haven’t talked since.

HJ Violet: Yva was surprised to find HJ to have one of the most comforting presences on the ship. HJ’s warm presence and manner of asking questions are appreciated in a way that Yva has trouble explaining. Perhaps it’s that HJ doesn’t have any association or complex understanding of the galactic economy, or maybe it is that HJ is just that nice a person, but Yva is glad to have someone like HJ on the ship.

HERO WUFF FEN SKRRN

True Appearance: Aqua blue and speckled with flower-like patches of royal blue and green, Hero looks well equipped for the shallow sea floor. And she is- with four webbed fingers on each hand and four pale green eyes, Hero is decidedly inhuman looking in her natural form.

Information:

When Hero was a child, liked to stay home and read. Her parents thought that she would want to be a local teacher or something equally mundane. No, Hero had a rich world in her head, and wanted to be a bit more like a superhero rather than that of her Shakespearean namesake. She didn't make a lot of friends growing up, likely because she often narrated in third person what was happening.

Hero got a job on a merchant ship to pay for fare to a big city on Jehk for a different job. The job amounted to picking up slack for her less technologically-inclined coworkers in the mail room of a company whose products she liked. This wasn't particularly exciting, but she learned how to use a variety of technology.

Eventually, she tired of the sedentary work, and got hired back onto a series of merchant ships working in the Communications department. Eventually, Hero tempted fate to get a job on board a pirate ship, The Weapon and it was the best decision she ever made. There was something enchanting and storybook like about the travels to Earth.

The Weapon's captain made some poor business (and personal) choices. After fourteen years on the crew, Hero was out of a job (and a lot of friendships!) She took odd jobs again for three years until seeing a job notice for another pirate ship: Prosperity.

Hero is a little quirky, but that's nothing new for the crew of Prosperity. She personifies all of the Communications equipment, and refers to them as having ongoing soap opera-like exploits. It's all for fun, but many in the past thought that she actually believed the stuff. No... Sometimes it's more fun to pretend to believe in something than to have to settle for reality. She's good at what she does for work, but can be an interesting partner to work with. It took a little time for her to persuade the hiring team of her new crew that she wasn't daft, but she got the position in the end!

KJEUK

True Appearance: Kjeuk resembles a fish. While many carreki seem to more closely resemble traditional Earth-like amphibians (despite convergent evolution), Kjeuk looks the most like a mangrove killifish in patterning with sandy colored scales and delicately webbed hands.

Information:

Kjeuk is a deeply awkward person, and he is happy to have so many friends and acquaintances in the club that love Earth theme parks as much as he does. He never wants to talk about anything else. If it isn't related to theme parks, he isn't interested. Intellectual property related to theme parks is on thin ice.

Kjeuk traveled to Kraysha because he knew he had a good chance of finding pirates in port in Rungung. Even if there are pirates that operate out of his home solar system of Tarrk, he doesn't know who they are. He knows there are pirates from Rungung, so that's where he booked a ticket to.

It is Kjeuk's lifelong dream to visit a theme park on Earth.

Kjeuk grew up rather wealthy, and hasn't had to work a day in his life. He has some investments that he nurtures to increase his income, and hasn't had much to spend good money on until the journey to Earth... where he will be lucky enough to join the crew of Prosperity in visiting a plethora of theme parks. He will rely on the crew to focus on planning the sequence of parks to visit when, purchasing tickets, and purchasing merchandise- all bankrolled by Kjeuk and the theme park club's members.

The only music Kjeuk likes to listen to is parade theme park music.

Guinevere Olkedo  Gwen Volnal

True Appearance: Gwen’s true appearance is markedly more severe than how she appears in human form - the sformer created a pretty close match, but something about smoothing out her sharp teeth, replacing her large, black eyes (all four of them) with two human ones, and other modifications to make her look less amphibian have left her with something of a baby face. Her coloration and patterning are reminiscent of a red salamander - but the reds are more vibrant, and her limbs fade into a darker brown with blue undertones - reminiscent of a strawberry poison dart frog (reference 1, reference 2, reference 3). Her tail assists with movement in the water - when she has one. If she loses it for whatever reason, a new one can be generated. .

Backstory: Guinevere was born to a prominent business family on Sturn. With older siblings to take the brunt of the training for taking over the company and younger siblings to be doted on, she was left to her own devices just a little bit more. There was still the constant pressure of measuring up to the family name, sure. But she was a high enough achiever that she managed to keep up and fly under the radar, not receiving much in the way of specialized attention from her parents. Until she was twenty-five years old, and allowed to take part in the annual ceremonial hunt.

Coming from a wealthy family, it wasn’t as though hunting was really something that needed to be done to survive - while the culture on their part of Sturn was largely carnivorous and hunting was considered an essential skill to teach, in practice it was largely ceremonial among the wealthier classes. So while Guinevere had certainly been educated on how to wield weapons, and her instructors had reported back that she was progressing well - it wasn’t until that day that they realized just how well, or that they could use this. Strictly speaking, not all parts of the family business were exactly what one could call ‘legal’. Even if that wasn’t the case, transporting goods through space could at times be a dangerous affair. Outsourcing muscle to defend goods could get expensive - and was honestly a little bit of a stain on their reputation among certain circles. Who better to head up an internal division one day than their own daughter?

With a plan in place, Guinevere’s training ramped up from there - both in weapons and combat, and the various other skills needed to head up a division in the family business. She chafed at the loss of freedom at first, but grew accustomed to it over the years. And besides, it wasn’t like she was learning anything she didn’t find engaging. It was actually kind of fun to be molded into a deadly weapon, in theory. In practice there were some uncomfortable realities to contend with. Surprisingly, the breaking point wasn’t even when her family went ahead and found her a fiance who fit in with their plans - arranged marriages weren’t uncommon in their culture, after all, and it wasn’t like she needed to love the guy. No, the breaking point came a few years later, when a mission gone wrong led to entirely too many casualties. Guinevere had never been one to shy away from pulling the trigger - but there was such a thing as too much collateral damage, and the realization that she was the only one who seemed to think so was what it took for her to pack up and get out.

She initially joined up on The Prosperity as a gunner a little under six years ago, using the name Gwen Volnal to avoid being connected back to her family. The ship wasn’t exactly a perfect fit for her, but it was in the right place at the right time for a convenient getaway. And even if the majority of the crew was a little soft for her liking, she did appreciate the directive to use non lethal violence and avoid collateral damage when possible. During her time on the ship, she had an on-and-off relationship with Blue over the course of about six months - and while the tumultuous end of that relationship wasn’t what prompted Gwen to leave The Prosperity behind, she did eventually move on in pursuit of bigger and better things. She tends not to stick in one place for too long, and recently found herself in yet another situation she sought to escape. She would almost rather die than run back to The Prosperity with her tail between her legs, but the Master Gunner position being open made for a convenient excuse to rejoin the crew with her pride intact. The fact that Blue is apparently still on the ship isn’t exactly a bonus, but she’s dealt with worse inconveniences before.

Skills: Gwen is a highly skilled markswoman - both when it comes to handheld weaponry, and operating the ship’s artillery. If you manage to separate her from her blaster, you’ll find that she’s just as ruthless in hand to hand combat. Her specialty is using her tail as a weapon while sformed - the tech disguises her appearance, leaving targets in for some surprise pain. It’s not a skill that she’s highly venomous, but she is adept at controlling it. She’s also very good at doubting others’ intentions and mentally separating herself from people and situations, though this isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Alrehs Liohni “Al Leone”

Romantic and/or Sexual Preference: To be honest, he’s only started giving this any thought in his old age. He misses his late wife dearly, but would be open to the “right” person. But it would have to be really right.

Faceclaim/Humanoid Appearance: Danny DeVito

True Appearance: Al is distinctly amphibious. He is exceptionally sturdy and well-equipped for swimming. Where the sformer gives the appearance of wild hair, this is the machine’s best approximation of Al’s external gills that strongly resemble an axolotl.

Information:

Al and Derros are family friends. Al’s grandson Frang and Derros actually grew up together. 

Al is friendly and chatty, and will happily be anyone’s honorary uncle or grandpa if they ask.

Acting as a cook on the ship is a “second act” career. In what he likes to call his “past life,” he managed a food store on Sturn that also served meals cooked in-store.

Al likes to tend to the greenhouse/vegetable garden area on the ship. He isn’t a vegetarian, but he has a healthy appreciation for fresh vegetables.

Looking for something to read? Al keeps a large selection of romance novels among his personal effects which he is happy lend out.

He has a tendency to hoard things (especially shiny things), but this habit has been largely curtailed over time. Still, he can be distracted by the shiniest of things.

When putting in orders for the ship’s pantry, Al has the occasional habit (perhaps doing this three times a year) of ordering something in too large of a bulk quantity.

He has a pet rrkohn (a cat-like domesticated animal) named Tony.

A lot of Al’s favorite cuisine to make is Earth Italian. He pretends to be of Italian descent when visiting Earth out of convenience.

Al is happy to share the kitchen if someone else wants to try their hand at cooking when he isn’t making the main meals for the ship’s crew. He’s a quick and efficient cook- except for recipes that really do need to marinade or simmer for many hours. He will not take shortcuts if they will provide inferior flavor.

NOTE: Players may attribute some actions to Al in a way that they should not to other NPCs. Al does not hold a direct impact to the plot, and is here for players to be able to talk about foodstuffs and be wholesome. Players should proceed with caution when attributing anything to Al that isn’t in his bio.

Beyrek “Blue” Sreleku

True Appearance: Blue has the sort of coloring of a marine iguana, with primarily black patterning (an evolutionary purpose: black absorbs light and Blue is cold-blooded), but also has parts that are white, red, and turquoise (mostly on shoulders, inside of legs, and on stomach). The texture on their skin is rough and bumpy. She has two large black eyes, and claws for gripping.  She also has a laterally-shaped tail to help propel her through the water, and sharp black and white spikes along her back.  They stand at a height of 5’11,” which is indicative of their individual species being fairly large. No matter if they’re in their true appearance or human appearance, Blue wears a constant unamused expression, many piercings along their ears, and engine grease and calluses on their hands.

Backstory:

Beyrek was born in the sand on the beaches of Jehk on the island of Zektul, the last of three eggs hatched to Trex, a loving but strict mother.  She knew who her father was, but men in her society were not particularly responsible in raising the young, only fighting with each other and keeping territories. Their parents were never together; only for the purpose of mating, as was the culture. She and her sisters grew up under the watchful eye of their mother, and also the watchful eye of the rest of the women in the colony, and all their children as well.  They were extremely close with both of their sisters, and were raised along with each of them to learn to fulfill their purpose as future mothers.  Her sisters, who were named Sudrex and Breksan, were more or less amenable to these roles, but Beyrek was not.  The three daughters were all educated at home by Trex along with other children in the community, and they didn’t get much of a taste of the outside world. But occasionally, their family would make trips to the city of Truungrekk to buy food and shop, and here was where Beyrek’s eyes were opened from a young age.  They saw Carreki who looked wildly different to them, and sometimes they saw people who didn’t look like Carreki at all.  While their mother would be at a checkout counter, Beyrek would be sneaking out of sight to look at people, read anything they could, and then would almost immediately be whisked away again, told to stay in line.

Beyrek and her sisters were nearing their 45th birthday, and in the Zektul community, that meant joining the breeding season, and it also meant a large celebration with a big party.  It seemed like everyone was scrambling to make preparations and everyone was excited…Except Beyrek.  From the moment they learned of their purpose, they wanted nothing to do with it.  The idea of being with a male repulsed them.  But any attempts to escape their fate was met with condescension.  Their sisters would tell Beyrek they’re just being nervous, their mother would say they’re too young to know what they want.  The week before, they headed to Truungrekk to pick up some food and some decorations, and their semi-aquatic vehicle broke down.  Beyrek had always been the handiest out of their sisters, fixing and tinkering with things around the house, but vehicle machinery was a skill she was never allowed to approach, and so they had to take it to a mechanic.  The shop was empty of customers, and so Beyrek went to the back and watched the mechanic work.  Strephut was friendly, and knew that this young girl didn’t know anything about repair work, and so he took it on himself to show her how.  To her immense surprise, she seemed to pick it up quickly, almost like her brain was built for this sort of thing.  She learned that Strephut was from Zektul, but had left the community in favor of less archaic rules.  Beyrek longed to learn more about engineering and mechanic work, and so Strephut asked her if she wanted to be hired as an apprentice.  She knew her mother would never approve, but she still took his contact information and went on her way, spending days trying to figure out how to ask Trex.

The night before the ceremony, Beyrek had it answered for her.  Trex found the contact information after it fell out of her bag, and immediately interrogated them on what it was about.  Beyrek came clean, saying she wanted to go and train under Strephut instead of partaking in the breeding season, and well, it didn’t turn out well.  There was a large screaming match between Beyrek and her mother and sisters, which ended in Beyrek packing their bags and leaving in the night.

So began the grueling work under Strephut.  Though she had a knack for this sort of work, it wasn’t easy to learn from nothing, and her boss sometimes lost patience with her.  She was eventually able to be promoted as manager, and that was what she did for about five years, until Strephut announced one day that he was retiring and leaving the shop to his son.  Beyrek and his son had never gotten along, he was sexist and mean, and the moment he took over the shop he took it on himself to fire her and all the other women in the shop.  Engraged, and with nowhere to go, Beyrek spent the next several years living on the streets and picking up freelance engineering work, often preparing spaceships for their maiden voyages, only to have the owner hire someone with experience in space.  And with a better attitude.

She realized she wasn’t really going to get anywhere without at least something else on her resume, and so she took out a loan and attended classes at the university.  This was extremely difficult for Beyrek; since she didn’t have a place to live, the library was her main shelter.  When she finally got her degree, the world didn’t exactly open for her, but she was getting more jobs, and a steadier income.  They eventually discarded their real name in favor of “Blue,” so that their whereabouts wouldn’t reach their family.  By the time word of the Prosperity came to Blue through secrecy and word of mouth, they had been living in an apartment for a couple months and were no longer living paycheck to paycheck.  Blue had a small reputation as a reliable engineer and someone who could be trusted to get the work done, and so they signed onto the Prosperity after asking for a job, worked her way up, and currently works her tail off to keep the ship going as the Chief Engineer.

Skills: Blue is very skilled at engineering, and knows the inner parts of a ship like the back of their claws.  They are smart with algebra, calculus and various sciences, but mainly physics. They can draw blueprints and are good with coming up with ways to streamline the inner workings of a ship.  They’ve always been pretty good at coming up with a come-back, or something sharp to say.  Very good at reaching things off of a tall shelf.  It goes without saying, but they can swim pretty well.

Derros Laernal

Faceclaim/Humanoid Appearance: Jonathan Bailey

True Appearance: Derros looks about as close to a salamander version of his Sformer visage as it gets. He is orange with green splotches down his back, and has a long tail.

Information:

Derros is the go-to guy for Prosperity when it comes to acquiring replacement parts and the types of supplies a ship needs to function. He does not deal in Human entertainment whatsoever, and that makes him a great neutral supplier.

He and Daphne are solid acquaintances and have had a few memorable wild nights on the town which they have numerous inside jokes about.

Derros has been asked to join the Prosperity crew, but turned down the offer, preferring to be his own boss and service multiple clients. He’s iron-clad when it comes to his word, though, and is (respectfully) also the supplier for The Bat Ray.

He knows a ton about parts and can explain where they are supposed to go on a ship, but physically messes up if he has to install them himself. He can explain the process to you up and down and into next year, but he can’t do anything more complicated than change a light bulb himself to save his life.
