The Time I Peed On Julie
My sister and I have different versions of our mutual favorite memories. When we tell them together we laugh identical silence, each insist our own memory is more pure. Redraw the police chalk. Promise our truths aren’t just the parts of ourselves we can live with. Truth is something we own and deny in the pursuit of survival. She and I have clung to the years of joy we’ve had in the retelling. The way we’ve made each other stronger in the survival of our memories. But what is her truth when she thinks of the scissors she threatened to cut off my hair with? The time she wrapped her small hands around my throat and choked?
