Carrison Week: Day 2- Proposal
Harrison had everything planned out.
He was going to take Carrie out for a nice dinner, then he was going to lead Carrie on a walk through some of the land, and when they got down by the river where it was dark and secluded, he would tell her to look up at the stars. While she was looking up, he would get down on one knee, and he would give her an excuse to look down, and then he would ask her.
Harrison opened the door at the restaurant, and ushered Carrie inside before him. They walked up to the maître d’. “Reservation for 2 for Ford.” Harrison told the man, smiling at Carrie after he said it.
“I’m sorry sir, but you’re not on the list.” Harrison’s smile immediately turned into a frown.
“That can’t be right, I made this reservation months ago. Ford. F-O-R-D.” Harrison stated. Carrie place a hand on his shoulder and squeezed.
The maître d' frowned at him, not appreciating the insinuation. “I know who you are and how to spell it, but I’m telling you it’s not here.”
Harrison fought the urge to roll his eyes. “Okay then, can we get a table anyway?”
“I’m sorry sir, but we are completely booked for the night.” Harrison sighed. He wasn’t going to start an argument in town.
Carrie leaned over to him, “Hey babe, it’s alright. We can go eat somewhere else.”
They walked out of the restaurant, Harrison feeling a bit dejected about the beginning of his plans for the night. They went to a diner down the block that they enjoyed eating at when they were in town.
It wasn’t quite the romantic dinner Harrison had imagined, and he was almost certain Carrie could see his frustration, though she hadn’t said anything.
After eating dinner, they made their way back to the ranch. Harrison thought maybe he could salvage the rest of the night.
“Why don’t we take a walk?” Harrison suggested, jostling the ring box in his pocket.
“Okay,” Carrie smiled and grabbed his hand, lacing their fingers together and giving his hand what she hoped would be a calming squeeze.
They had been walking in silence for a few minutes, when Carrie spoke up. “I really love it out here.” She looked at him, and noticed he seemed to have something on his mind.
Harrison could feel the heat of her stare on him, and looked at her. “I’m glad you enjoy it out here. I wasn’t really sure how you were going to feel about living in the middle of what is basically nowhere Wyoming part time.”
“It’s nice. A definite welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the city.” Harrison smiled at her and squeezed her hand. They walked quietly down to the river.
Harrison looked up, and instead of seeing the stars like he had hoped, all he saw was thick clouds. Suddenly they heard a loud clap of thunder, and saw a flash of lightning.
“OH you have got to be kidding me!” Harrison mumbled. He turned to look at Carrie, “It looks like we are going to have to cut this walk shorter than I had planned. It’s going to storm and it’s not safe by the lake and with all these trees.”
They had only made it a few steps before there was another clap of thunder and rain started pouring down. The couple made a mad dash for the house, but due to not being able to see very well in the dark, Harrison tripped over a tree root sticking up out of the ground. His foot caught and he felt his ankle snap.
He couldn’t help but scream out in pain, causing Carrie to turn around and see him laying on the ground. Carrie attempting to help him stand up, but her small frame couldn’t support him. She ran to the house and called 911. She ran back outside with a towel and a blanket as to attempt to keep him from getting pneumonia.
It wasn’t too long before the sounds of sirens could be heard coming closer.
Carrie had informed the operator that he was still outside and not in the house. Luckily they hadn’t been far from the residence, so it didn’t take long to find them. Carrie rode in the ambulance with Harrison, and it was determined that he had at the very least severely sprained it, and very possibly broke it.
They cut the leg of the pants on the injured ankle, and Carrie heard something fall out as they tried to take the other half off. She looked around but couldn’t see anything, and turned her attention back to Harrison.
Carrie sat in a private room waiting to be informed about what was going on with Harrison when a nurse walked in.
“Unfortunately, he still isn’t out of x-ray yet, but one of the paramedics said they found this in the back of the ambulance and asked that I give it to you.” The nurse handed Carrie a small box, and Carrie took it with a confused look on her face, but thanked the nurse anyway.
She was about to open the box when a doctor walked in. “You can go in and see him now.”
She followed the doctor to his private room, and they had ice on his ankle, but it looked very swollen and bruised already.
Harrison smiled at her as she walked in, and she smiled back, but Harrison could tell it was strained. “Hey sweetheart.”
“Hey.” she flipped the box in her hand.
Harrison noticed the movement, and saw the object in her hand. Immediately connecting what it was, his eyes widened. “Hey princess, where did you get the box?” he gestured towards her moving hands with his head.
“Apparently it was in the ambulance, and I’m guessing it was in your pants.” she shrugged. “I didn’t get the chance to open it, but I’m pretty sure I know what’s in there.”
Harrison sighed, this is definitely not how he pictured this night to go. He wanted it to be perfect and yet here he was, laying in a hospital bed with his ankle throbbing and probably broken. “Look I had this marvelous night planned out, but nothing seemed to go to-“
He was cut off by Carrie speaking. “Ask me.” “I’m sorry, what?” He couldn’t tell if he was beginning to become delirious from the pain.
She walked over to the bed, grabbed his hand, placed the ring box into his palm, and curled his fingers around it. “Ask me. Right now. I don’t need a fancy dinner, and I don’t need a perfect night. Fuck, I don’t even need a ring. I just need you to ask. So… ask.”
Harrison took a deep breath and opened the box. He heard Carrie gasp when she saw the ring, and he couldn’t help but feel a tiny surge of pride. “Carrie Frances Fisher, will you marry me?”
“Yes!” she shouted, and even though she knew it was coming, she couldn’t help the tears that escaped.
Both of their hands were shaking as he put the ring on, after a failed attempts. She placed her newly ringed hand on his cheek before leaning down and kissing him.
To Harrison, this was a better pain reliever than anything he could be prescribed.
