C. Thomas Howell as Carson Wolf | The Punisher
Carson: What are your weaknesses?
Dinah: I don't have any, asshole.
Now close your eyes, Frank. I’m gonna do you a favor. You’re gonna see your family real soon.
The Punisher - Two Dead Men
*ain’t that a kick in the head plays while Frank kicks the shit out of Carson Wolf*
lol
Predictability
I’ve only got to the end of second episode but so far the thing that bothers me most is the predictability. I mean the over the top almost ridiculous amount of violence when Frank murders people in different ways is gratuitous and is making it hard to root for him even though the show makes sure we know they all deserved it. But that is not a that much a problem if the story is interesting but this so far just goes through the motions to find a way to bring Punisher back from death retirement after he got his revenge in Daredevil and disappeared by faking his death. It means that the whole thing so far is the reasons why Frank has to keep revenging instead of dealing with his trauma.
Dinah’s boss was obviously evil and corrupt but it wasn’t just that. He was also involved in Frank’s family death. And he wasn’t just covering people who did this - he was part of the killing. The only part I liked that he died so soon because I did not expect that. I recognised C. Thomas Howell so I assumed he’d be an antagonist for longer. Not the final one, of course, I’m pretty sure that’s Frank’s (self-proclaimed) best friend from the time they served in Afghanistan. I forgot Ben Barnes was in this and know nothing about his character but just going by cliches former best friend now working for private military contractor must be evil.
And it’s hard of something more cliche than the memories of dead wife laughing backlit, hair down with streaks of sunshine. She’s beautiful, sweet, angelic. She speaks in hushed tones. She laughs and kisses. And then gets shot in the head. Those visions are such a cliche for dead love interest that it almost hurts to watch. I’m just glad that the show at least mentions this is the memories he obsesses with and the real life with his family wasn’t this idyllic. At least his kids get a little bits of personalities in those flashbacks while the wife is nothing but fridged motivation.
Even the small parts are obvious - like I knew the gun was not loaded. They just talked about torture not working. It was obviously a set up for villain monologue and the guy delivered. The wounds were only there to make sure he couldn’t run. Or I knew Frank was hiding in the trunk. (And I have chilling suspicion the black friend is going to die.)
But there are great parts: I love Dinah and her new partner and the secondary characters (Shohreh Aghdashloo!) are great but most of all the show does great showing effects of trauma. And in Frank’s case also how revenge only helps for a moment and doesn’t solve any of Frank’s issues but it’s all he has so he’ll just keep doing it as long as he can find targets.
Madani: So the good news is that I know who killed Agent Wolf...the really, very, super bad news is that I know who killed Agent Wolf
