carter bites at the edge of her sleeve   (her mother had said she’d be here an hour ago but she wasn’t here and why wasn’t she here and had she died and maybe she just forgot about carter and--   the buzz of a cellphone,  an apology from her mother,  a promise that she’d be there in the next hour).   the library is closed now,    the shutters squeezed down.     ‘‘    excuse me,    ’’     carter said, quietly,  to the lone stranger outside the library,   @girlseventeen.  her voice is quiet enough to be swept up by an oncoming wind,  so she repeats herself,  this time a touch too loudly.     ‘‘   do you happen to have a quarter on you?   i’m carter.    i’ll give it you back,  i promise,  i’m just trying to trick the vending machine.     ’’

‘‘      nuh - nuh - nothing’s that important,   you know.       ’’      carter is wide - eyed as a trembling hand wraps around a flashlight,   trying not to look at @fablesque​,  trying not to look at the gaping wound of a basement that the door led to.   she decided,  then and there,   that she hated olivia’s plans.     ‘‘    i don’t think i’m ready to die.   i’ve never even tasted key lime pie.     ’’

carter was born in the dark. her mother did not want to hold her   :      she didn’t cry as a baby, something deathly quiet about her,  that had her passed from nurse to nurse with an uncomfortable glance.   routine check - ups showed that her lungs were fine,   but carter didn’t utter a word until she was twelve.    aero.    it’s a strong word,  more of a squeak,  and she repeats it over and over and over and over.    carter was pushed onto psychologists,  therapists,   witch doctors   :    anyone that might help.

it is then that her mother meets benjamin.   he takes an instant liking to young carter,   undergrown and strange,   with her wide eyes and her shaking hands.  he offers to privately tutor her at the dione to help her speak and, within weeks, the lessons were helping. soon enough, the mccleans moved into the dione for a full time residency.

benjamin has told carter that she is the vessel of aeros and that she is semi - possessed by a piece of his soul   :    she belives this fully.
