WuWa 2.6 and 2.7 Story
Spoilers ahead, obviously.
If I'm being honest, I think Avidius is the literal only well written part of 2.6 and 2.7. Augusta was okay, but it was an overwhelming amount of exposition. Getting her unabridged backstory dumped on us felt pretty jarring, and detracted from the story of the hunt. The whispers were relevant, yes, but that doesn't mean we need her whole life story. 2.6 feels like where the game got into a bad habit of mostly telling and rarely showing.
Iuno's story was bad. Like, really bad. First off, why the hell are we going to headfirst into the Dark Tide, or Chaos, or whatever it's called this time to save someone we literally just met a few days ago at most? The stakes just felt way too high and the reward way too small. Also, Chaos is surprisingly grounded. I expected traversal to be much more akin to reaching the Dreamless where we had to fly through air or something. Or maybe have gravity be a suggestion at best? Instead we got regular ass walking. Not very creative for a realm whose name suggests normal logic goes out the window. Then we get to Iuno's exposition. And man, there is a lot of it. And it's super boring. I was quite literally struggling to stay awake through this. I think the problem is my suspension of disbelief just can't handle the story assuming I'm feeling to a connection this strong to someone we, again, literally just met.
With 2.7, it's cool that they brought everyone back, but the part where you use the power of friendship to break out of the condensed dark tide just kind of illustrated how irrelevant these people have been until now. The game wants me to think these characters are my friends, but they haven't been with me every step of the journey. So they instead only feel like people I've hung out with a few times. And the thought breaking out of a depressive state because of people who I've only hung out with a few times is kind of awkward. It's not like the end of say, a Persona game, where it feels like people you've made genuine connections with are lending you their strength. It feels more like a classmate or coworker you might have shared a few beers with is now what gives you strength.
Now, Avidius is where the writing actually shines. The man had an actual character arc. He started as this hero boasting multiple accomplishments, with some whispers of shady connection, to realizing his accomplished were all a figment of everyone's collective imagination, to resenting his existence and resenting his creator, to resolving to forge his own fate, to being forced to make the ultimate sacrifice. The best part of this is, we're not told all this information, we see it happen. We're with Avidius every step of this journey, and we build a real connection with his journey. If we're diving headfirst into the abyss to save someone, it shouldn't be Iuno. It should be Avidius.
I think 2.6 would have benefited far more from deepening the friendship between Cartethiya and Lupa. Or establishing Rover, Cartethiya, and Lupa as a trio for the rest of the arc? It probably would have been too late at that point, but I feel this would have helped with the finale at least a bit.
Love these outfits
I love this event so much ! It's nice to see older characters show up again. It reminds us that they are still alive, still part of this world, and not completely forgotten as if they never existed. I really enjoyed mixing the drinks and decorating the different rooms. It was a nice change from combat events, and I hope we will get more of them in the future.
